In one of my previous threads I said I was using Unique powder, mainly because I had 5 lbs of it. Several comments were along the lines that "there's better powder for this or that. So my question is. What is Unique good for? Where does it shine?
TIA Red

I use it in the 9, 380, 38, and 357. I also use W231 and Universal, both of which meter better.

45 Colt with a 255g bullet. It’s dirty as can be with cowboy loads and not ideal, but get that bullet over 900 and it burns clean while staying at reasonable pressures. I’ve got 70 plus pounds of 255s and load for several SAA and Rugers. The Rugers often get a diet of H110 and 300g hardcast. Honestly even the 255s at 900 have not failed to penetrate through pigs so I’m not sure why I’m prepping for brown bear. You never know.
Unique does spike when pushed too hard and is not ideal for hot loads.

Unique does a little of everything but does nothing the best.
It's a little fast to use in hotter loads and when loaded slower leaves greasy soot all over a revolver.
Honestly, it's probably best at cast bullet reduced rifle loads. I use 10 gr. under a 185-ish cast bullet in .30-30 WIN for non-hunting loads.
Pass the gravy.

It does it all despite neighsayers. Unique has been around since 1899 or so. It can be used for rifle, shotgun pistol applications. I've used it for 30? Years. Have loaded 38,357,44,44m,45C,30-30,38-55,45-70.
For me it shines in 45 Colt and 357 rifles and 357 revolvers. Unique because it can do just about any reloading task. Took my largest axis with a Marlin 45Colt, 255 LeeRF and Unique. IIRC, 8 axis with that combination. Last year's bucks died of Unique lead delivery from 357 And 30-30 Marlin Cowboys. Sure there are different powders, some better perhaps, I'm pleased with it for my applications. I hope I'm never without it

45 Colt with heavy bullets, 38 special, and light loads in a 357 mag. Its a good revolver powder. I just cant see it in a semi, because it is a bit dirty unless run hot. Never ran it in a rifle except all those rounds could all be used in a rifle.

A poll from castboolits. 358 of 705 said Unique for only one powder. Yes, for cast bullets, Unique is the choice.

Hodgdon came out with Universal and I switched to it when time to buy pistol powder since it is a lot cleaner burning and they are so close in burn rate. Most loads within a tenth of a grain or two. Read they made Unique cleaner burning after that but haven't tried it since then.

Unique gives a nice puff of smoke too. But not as much as A2400.

My fist reload ever was done with Unique powder. For me it is a do all for 45 Colt, 44spl, and 38spl when using cast bullets. The Skeeter Skelton load for 44spl has been a favorite of mine for nearly 35 years.

Ditto on the Skeeter load. For being such a relatively ancient powder Unique is still incredibly useful.

I got a 3lb jug cheap several years ago and use it in practice ammo; 38 special, 9mm, and 45acp. Like everybody else, I wouldn't claim it is the best powder for any of them. Dirty, incomplete burning in light loads, but much better when the pressure is on the higher end. Meters well enough for me to get accurate and safe rounds at the levels I load it (under max).

I seldom use Unique anymore, reserving it for .38 special. I still have 2 lbs and 300 .38 special rounds loaded so its going to last a while, but I will probably always have some on the shelf just because I can get it to work in several cartridges if I need to. But I have also moved to W244 which seems to work better in several loads I have for 45 Colt and 40 S&W. I am on my 2nd 8 lb jug of W244.

Ditto on the Skeeter load. For being such a relatively ancient powder Unique is still incredibly useful. What's funny is that I didn't even know that it was called the Skeeter load until recently. It was one taught to me by my friend's dad and I've never felt the need to change. No need to fix something that isn't broken. Was talking to someone and they pointed out to me that it was the Skeeter load and I was completely dumbfounded.

See? Everyone says it can do anything. That is correct. There is nothing it's best at though. Best at ummmm.. but they're are many applications where it's just as good as any other powder in a wide range of handgun calibers. Not to mention shotgun loadings.
Uprisings started or quelled, tornadoes rerouted, elections rigged.
