I’ve had enough of hauling my 5 foot gun around. (Includes suppressor)

It’s awkward in the blind, gets snagged walking through brush, I’m done.

Pondering a short barrel 30-30 since I like to still hunt on occasion.

Need adequate killing power in a small package (including suppressor)

Perhaps a 18” 308 bolt gun? 16.5” 30-30? Something else? Please don’t say short barrel gaymoore.

Optimizing for portability, all my shots are 150 yards or less

16" Sig Cross .308 w/ 6" silencer. No where near 5'. The "haul" part...it's collapsed and broken down and fits in a small soft case.

Here’s my answer to a maneuverable 30-30. 16” and threaded. Plus it’s a Marlin!

I hunt very often with 30-30. I kept it up for years because folk gave me chit and I was hell bent. The 30-30 will kill anything that walks if you are a killer.

The new Rossi R95 16” Trappers I’ve seen are very nice and supposedly Adam from RPP had a hand in it?

Youtube ranger point rossi r95

I’d buy one but I only use stainless rifles and I have all the stainless Marlins I need

Nothing wrong at all with a 30/30
Killed my first and many since with something chambered in 30/30
Levers and single shot cheapies. They all worked, and animals died.
Somewhere along the line ( gun magazines I'm sure) the notion was
spread around that a 30/30 was barely adequate for a hundred yards,
and that anything needed pointy projectiles to kill a wt deer or coyote.
I can say for sure that specialty ammunition is not needed or necessary
to take animals using a 30/30. Any decent wallyworld ammunition
in a properly sighted in 30/30 rifle will cleanly take your animal

I use to but my first 30-30 led me down a rabbit hole to other lever guns including the 356 and 307 Winchester’s which come in the same short handy package but pack more punch.

Been hunting with my Marlin 36a since I acquired it in the 90's. Put a Leupold 3x9 Firedot on it with 150gr Winchesters kill everything they hit. Longest shot around 150 yards, most right at 100 yards. As much as I want a different gun, I just can't do it!

Nothing handles any better in the deer woods than a 30-30.

I killed a 10 point buck on the second day of deer season with a Marlin 30-30. 18.5 inch barrel with squared lever.
This was the first time I have hunted deer in 56 years.

I made sure the deer was within a range I was comfortable with and made sure to put the bullet right in the vitals. He ran about 50 yards and died just before he hit some really gnarly central Texas cover.

I used 150 grain Remington Core-Lokt. There was no exit wound and no blood trail. Since the only thing I have killed with this gun is a hog at about the same distance and with a good exit wound I will use it in the future but will continue to know its (and my) limitations and not exceed either.

I have my grandpa’s old Glenfield 30A in .30-30 and take it occasionally. Like you, my shots are usually pretty close. I did kill a doe with it a couple years back at about 150 yards using Hornady LEVERvolution ammo. Actually one of my longest shots in Arkansas or Oklahoma. Would be interesting to acquire a current version levergun with a threaded muzzle for my Trash Panda can.

Do it. I hunt with a Marlin 336 1895 and 1894. Going to go shorter this weekend with the Ruger Bisley solo.

Marlin levers are my favorite.

I have a 16" 30-30 lever and a 16" 308 bolt.

I prefer the bolt for killing but the lever gun is more fun.

The bolt is ALOT lighter too.

I used to, but it was mainly used as a "buggy gun" because it was quick to grab and get on target with (iron sights) while creeping around in the brush country jumping animals and was also what I always carried as a "finisher" when tracking wounded animals for clients or other hunters. Sighted in at 50 yrds and was comfortable up to 100 with it. I love a short open sights 30/30 lever gun.

I killed a lot of deer back in the day with my Marlin 336 in 35 Rem, while Dad and my brother used the same rifles in 30/30. All had 4 power scopes. No rifle and caliber I’ve used since has killed em any faster or deader. I can however kill em further away now, but inside 150 and even 200 yards, I was very efficient in meat gathering.

Lightweight AR-15 in either 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel. 14.5” pinned and welded, and then a lightweight can.

I have an old Marlin and a pre 64 Winchester. Both 30 30. I use them for anything short of about 60 yards and different loads.

He’s not wrong with this answer

Have both of these. Have a custom Wilson Combat 6.8 SPC that my baby girl will be using this year, it's her rifle and she's good with it on paper. Can't wait for the upcoming hunt and this season. Late start this year, but there will be blood soon.

I like the Ruger Scout in 308. The synthetic stock model only weighs 6 lbs.

With suppressor and lighter weight scope it’s 8.5 lbs and 42” overall length.

That’s a nice rig. May have to follow your lead. I have a Savage 18” 308 bolt, LE type rifle. Stock swap and slap on the can.

Liking my 1947 Marlin Model 36 -- the last year before the 336 came out.
