I had a group of probably 12 come swim through the decoys this morning. I thought about laying into them, but just let them be today as I didn't feel like cleaning them.

Well you see what happened was. There was a bunch of them. They were really annoying me. And would t leave. So I gave them three warning shots and someone eight of them had a heart attack. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2023/11/full-46861-405150-img_1374.jpeg)

First you start with a roux Ha ha, yep. I never shot one or ate one, but have done ringer jerky once that wasn’t bad.

Need someone to drop a coot recipe they like… may shoot a few next trip out. If nothing else, probably can’t go wrong with some jalapeños, bacon, and cream cheese.

I had a buddy shoot two one morning with me…he mainly did it to pester me about my dog retrieving them. She went and got them for no other reason but I wanted him to have to eat them He calls me on Wednesday that week and says “we ain’t passing no more coots, they taste as good as the rest of them”. Fast forward two weeks when we were at another lake and he killed 3. He calls me that week and proclaims he’s done killing coots. I about pissed myself laughing at him telling me the story about they were the worst thing he’d ever put in his mouth They must’ve been real bad because I never saw him shoot another coot

We traded coots for donuts in college. The typical owners of donut shops are not very discerning. Life lessons learned in college still employed.

Need someone to drop a coot recipe they like… may shoot a few next trip out. Here go, step by step coot recipe... Step 1: Breast coot, get skin off, this is the hardest part. Step 2: Put plastic bag on coot breast, and smash it with rubber mallet, then cut up real good with a knife, this will help to digest coot. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/usergals/2017/12/full-2250-129184-img_2628.jpg) Step 3: Put coot mixture in a bowl.. Step 4: Add 1 cup of dried dog food (high quality).. Step 5: Mix well, and watch them go crazy over it. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/usergals/2017/12/full-2250-129187-img_2632.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/usergals/2017/12/full-2250-129188-img_2636.jpg)

I've eaten them my whole life and really like them. My favorite is pot roasted with cajun seasoning and red wine with the trinity cooked down into a gravy. They also make a great gumbo with some smoke sausage. I haven't killed any in quit a while, but wouldn't pass one up if I had the chance. Never try to pluck them, always asking them.

I wouldn't scare them out of the decoys! Can't count how many times I've seen ducks fly over decoys to land with a raft of coots.

Again,
You can make sausage out of anything, which is basically what Cajun cooking is. Spicy sausage with sauce. It's what sausage was designed for.
I have a half dozen black decoys in my spread. Kind of a compromise between coots and just colorless decoys. When I was a youngster, it's what we hunted with because they were cheap.
No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.

Any water I hunt that has coots on the lake/pond, and all I use is a coot spread....I mean 50+...in groups either side of the blind, from near the blind on out to about 35 yards...I leave an open spot in front of the blind, with 1-3 teal or gadwall, or my favorite choice widgeon on one side of the "hole"... and an "on the water" floating MOJO painted the slate blue/black that my coots are painted, on a jerk string...and that's it...then you just have to be alert...because singles, pairs and small bunches will just bore straight in and land if you don't shoot.

I have shot one coot in my life just to see how they taste. Will never shoot another so that should tell you how it tasted

I bet that setup does work well. There's one area that is draw only where the big ducks get smart quick. You'll rarely decoy anything but teal, spoons, and maybe a few gadwall. The mallards and pintail go land with the raft of coots every time. I told myself if I ever get drawn there again I'm gonna paint a bunch of old diver decoys that I don't use as coots and setup exactly as you described.

I started getting coot decoys for their numbers in some places and for confidence decoys as much as anything, too
