Old timers will tell you not to use soap on your cast iron because back in the day soap was made with lye which would strip seasoning off. But it is perfectly fine to wash cast iron with dish soap these days. But if you want to listen to grandma go ahead.. https://www.southernliving.com/food/kitchen-assistant/can-you-use-soap-on-cast-iron

Guy, you can use all the soap you want. Everyone in this house knows that soap doesn't even go near the cast iron.

Me and dead grandma and our cast iron are doing fine without soap. Yep, and I hardly ever need anything to clean them up, a quick wipe with a lint free rag is all I need.

Contrary to popular belief, you can use a small amount of soap to clean cast iron cookware! Large amounts of soap can strip the seasoning off your pan, but you can easily re-season your pan as needed. https://www.lodgecastiron.com/faqs

I have Griswold, Lodge and Field Company casts. The seasoning on my lodge was messed up with dawn dish soap by my in laws. I was able to build it up again but we burnt some steaks on it so it’s my throw away cast.

I am one who agrees it ok to use light soap on a properly Seasoned cast iron, but also agree there is rarely a need.
I usually just rinse and wipe with something to clean it and then dry. For baked on stuff, put water in and boil and that loosens enough to usually make it wipe clean. If that doesnt do the trick, light soap and water is fine.
Important to dry and then reapply oil to the cooking surface. The last time i used our small one i actually heated and applied oil, also to dry it completely before applying oil.

Me and dead grandma and our cast iron are doing fine without soap. I use cast iron 5 days a weak, its impossible to not use stainless chain link cloth and a mild soap like palmolive occasionally , or the build up would require electrolysis and vinegar bath to get it all off. I also spend a day seasoning mine with 5 layers of seasoning made of Grapeseed Oil, Sunflower Oil, and Beeswax in the oven. Store with same blend or light coat avocado oil.

I use my cast iron on my glass top. I am just very careful not to slide it around and scratch the glass though.

While cast iron can be cleaned with soap, I usually do not use it. Sometimes all that’s needed is a wipe out..
I also use cast iron on a glass stove top all the time.

Oh crap. I saw this too late.
Wife asked me if I had a cast iron skillet she could have. Found a new one I have never used in garage, covered in dust and other stuff.
I rinsed with water and scrubbed. Used a drop of soap. Then put it on stove to dry and get hot, wiped down with grape seed oil. Then gave it to her.

When my parents were married in 1940, they were given a set of Wagner cast iron skillets and a Dutch oven. When Mom passed away, we divided it all up. I ended up with the 8 inch skillet, which is fine, I love iron skillet cornbread. In 83 years, this skillet as well as the rest of them have never been washed with soap, a damp cloth and towel dried. It is seasoned with bacon fat, from first seasoning on, none of those fancy oils. My mother would roll over in her grave and probably come back and haunt the offender for eternity.

I use cat iron and have always cleaned with soap and water, dry it with a towel and then store it with a light coating of oil . Haven’t had any problems in 20+ years
