Got my Abitibi pike mount back. Caught last April through the ice on a 28 inch Fenwick ultralight rod, 6 lb test, no leader. 1/4 oz jig head tipped with a pinhead minnow. 38.5 inches and 16 lbs. Was hemming and hawing about getting a mount made but the unique lack of markings and the pale grey/pink colour sealed the deal. Awesome fish…bet that was a fun fight Total wrong gear for that fish - many many 4 letter words uttered during that battle. Was fishing for panfish. Reel was a 500 series Sedona - basically the smallest lightest spinning reel you can find. He took out almost all my line 6 times. Get him close to the hole and he would flip out as soon as i tried to turn his head into the hole and take off running. I really don't understand how he did not bite off without a leader - as soon as i had my hands in his gills as he was coming up the hole he did bite off.
