School me on what is the best kind of hog trap to get.. How long, tall, wide, wire mesh on the floor, what type of door open side to side or swing up, what kind of release the door mechanism?
Thanks!

Lots of opinions on which door. Corrals are best I think, but in a box trap I like open top. Yes, a big pig can get out, but so can the stupid deer. 'Doesn't matter how rotten your bait is, some deer is gonna check it out. Trap for coons first with Duke's or similar. And chain/wire it down to posts in ground or a tree. Persevere!

Agree with Creekrunner. I found a buck with a broken neck in mine.

I would suggest getting an electronic gate (game camera controlled) on your trap so that you can see what is in the trap before you drop the door. That way, you will also know what is in your trap before you check it. This will eliminate by-catch issues if you do it right.

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8hkLKhF/I keep it very simple. Spring loaded door with a short piece of wood to hold the door open. Pig pushes in and the board drops but still allows others in. I used. Cheaper cattle panels on this one and the piglets can craw out the 6”x6” openings at the top. Also have had pigs crawl out so I always have a top on them. Think this one is 4’ wide 8’ deep and 4 or so tall.

My neighbor at our place has a Pig Brig and he's caught a bunch of hogs. When I 1st saw a Pig Brig online I questioned how well it would hold up, but his has held up. They are pricy though.

We run 2 different box traps. One is an open door that swings from the side, and closes once triggered. The other is 2 doors that open from the ground up and swing upwards for them to root the door up. Both work and both have caught deer.
Many years ago I built a round hog panel in the shape of a "6". I made it larger and it would catch more pigs. But it was open on top and would be VERY interesting when you walk up to the trap. Some would jump out and freak out.

Tractor supply hog trap. 400 bux. I catch hogs every time I set it up. I use a bag of corn and couple boxes of powder jello. They love cherry.
