I am in need of a good hog trap. Are there any traps for sale that are similar to the Boar Buster that aren't that expensive?

Or does anyone have a good design there willing to share? These pigs are smart and in heavy woods.

Thanks!

I don’t have anything that big but I have a traditional style trap that comes apart. One man can move it and I installed a trip wire to keep the door open until they hit the back.

Did you build that trap or did you purchase it? How long does it take to disassemble and reassemble? Thanks

Purchased and modified the two I have. 2-3 mins to setup or take down. Monarch hunting products makes it. We just added the trigger device, everything else came that way.

This is it: https://www.deerfeeder.com/product-page/hog-trap

We bought a few of them and they worked with us on the price which was nice. They make good quality products.

Did you try the trap as bought ? I have never had any luck with what is referred as a rooter trap, I have watched hogs walk around a rooter trap but never try to raise the door.

Nope. This was how we did it from the start. I felt having the door propped open got more pigs in.

I will mention that having the door up and open did get me a few deer over the years. I figured out the attractant I was using was bringing them in though. Once I stopped using it the deer problem went away but I had 3 or 4 live releases where I was lucky not to get kicked in the face.

We had a hard time getting pigs to go in the small door on some traps. I watched as pigs would go up to the door and just look in and eat the corn around the trap. So we built a trap 8ft x 10ft trap with a 4ft x 8ft door. The double rail around the top keeps pigs from climbing out, and deer can jump out.
The sides come apart and stack nicely in the bed of a truck. My wife and I can take one down and set up in 15 minutes.
I have caught over 200 pigs in this trap, 250+ pounds often. I have two traps like this.

That’s a good looking setup and better for deer that like hog bait. Nice setup.

That looks similar to my old traps I designed and built. One was called the "deer proof" hog trap with that exact rail around the top. I sold quite a few of them, they would let deer, exotics, turkey, etc... to escape but hogs could not get over the edge.

GIve me some details on the trigger mechanism you use, please. I've tried a few different schemes with different degrees of luck with each! THanks!

On keeping deer out of a box trap —

I stretched a piece of fence wire across the opening about six inches below the top of the trap, and placed another piece just behind the door. The theory is that a deer's antlers will hit it and cause them to back out. So far (3-4 years) it's worked and while we've still caught some does they're easier to release than the bucks with antlers.

The hogs are accustomed to going through brush and whatnot, and they just slide under the wire without issue.

Well i do not care for the root doors I like a swing door with a trip wire running across the back and up to an "L" shaped trigger swinging from the top holding the door open but you can do the same with a root style door just have to run something across the trap to hold the trigger. A plastic coated wire will just feel like weeds to a hog and they will push it out of their way so it tends to work nicely.

I have been piling thorny brush in the door of mine for a long time and the hogs find a way in if they want to get in. Don't catch any deer when I do this.

Look at my first set of pictures where the trap is set. The trigger is a piece of metal with a cable that goes back over the top and holds the doors open. As soon as one hits that bar it slips off the L brackets and the door comes down.

Forgive my lack of drawing talent, but I think this shows how mine works. (big door trap pictured previously)
I put one of those steel cable hoops (thimble) on the end of my cable and slip it over a peg. When the pigs just barely bump that cable the door is dropping.

That’s a great looking trap. Would you ever consider making some to be sold?

If you really want to go high tech get a cel phone camera and build a cell phone Triger. I did so I can trigger my traps only when I’m able to ret to my property and eliminating trapping anything but hogs. I also set up a feeder on top of the trap that is raccoon proof [Linked Image]
