I skipped football practice by saying I was sick and went to the state fair with my parents on a school day. The next day, the coach asked me if I was feeling better and what I did to get better. After a really believable story about staying in bed and sweating off a fever, he told me I was on the 10 o'clock news, walking behind the reporter doing the story, wearing my football jersey. I had never ran that much before or done so many pushups

I don't know this kid you speak of but I have zero problems with a kid skipping some days doing some fun stuff if he does his work.
My Dad used to periodically pull me out of school to do fun things, but he wouldn't do it if my grades weren't good and I wasn't toeing the line so to say. He called them mental health days... Judd does not even have littles besides a fur missile and knows the correct answer.

Think all you buzz haters got my point wrong as usual. I don't give a chit if you take your kid out of school or if they ever go, I just find it WOKE to call it a "SELF CARE" Day.

It doesn't matter what the name of it is. Is kids get to [censored] off today any better/worse than self care? It means the same thing lol

No problem in my book if he's a good mannered kid and his grades are in check. Enjoy the game.
I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect.

That's right. As long as my grades were up my Dad would pull me out of school once in a while for either a half or a full day to go deer hunting. Those were always my most favorite days! This. Those were the best times - sometimes it was to go fishing - sometimes an afternoon dove hunt - and usually a day and a half to go deer hunting. I remember the Dads of several kids in my grade doing the same for their kids. Our small school didn't mind - everyone was honestly pretty decent kids at that point. (This was in the 90s)

Heck, when my son was in high school he used to go to the airport handled catching his flights and flying to North Dakota by himself. My hunting buddy and I would pick him up at the airport. He bird hunted with us for a week. We talked to the school in advance. He did all his work beforehand. When he came back he was not behind on anything, nor did I teach him to be deceptive. There are lessons learned out doing things with men that you don’t learn in school. There were also lessons learned about taking care of his responsibilities.

My kids school district has gone bat !@#$ crazy in the past couple of years about excused vs non-excused absences. When our kids missed a bunch of school in the past, but still had all A's or A's/B's, it was basically a please fill out this form on the absences and we will rubber stamp approved on it. Now they are all over the parents about absences and are making kids go to after-school/weekend study halls where they basically sit in the lunchroom and play on their phones for 4 or 8 hours. But hey, the school district is getting it's money for having kids in attendance.
All that to say, she may be using "Self Care" day because it's woke enough to get the attendance people to mark it as an excused absence without a bunch of pushback or Dr's notes... If you say my kid is taking a hunting day, they're going to mark it as an unexcused absence. After 5 of those, you're going to get pulled in front of the principle for a parent/teacher conference and the kid will be sitting in the cafeteria playing on their phone for hours.

I can see both sides. I doubt that the educational process will be set back very far if a kid misses a couple of days.
However, does that set a good example for their future? If I have a employee that takes time off to rewind, get their head straight, etc, it needs to be okayed in advance. If not, their butt is mud.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

In today's age I see even less of an issue with it, considering the lockdowns and both parents and kids alike working and doing their schoolwork remotely. I worked remotely for a long time and spent many hours hunting & fishing on the clock, thanks to modern technology I never missed a beat. As long as you're taking care of your business it's all good. If not, totally different story.

We take our kids out of school for vacation for several days at least once every year. Quality family time is much more important than perfect attendance, IMO.

You can’t always predict when the stress will be too much; kind of like waking up with a fever. The responsible thing to do is using PTO regularly and setting strict boundaries at work to minimize the build up of stress. I have a lot less stress these days because of this approach. We have a great working environment at my hospital because my section doesn’t contact each other outside of business hours unless it’s a dire situation that cannot wait until business hours, and has no problem running interference for each other. Other people’s emergencies are not necessarily ours.

Kids belong in school when it's in session. The under achievers for sure, others not so much.

I had some pretty cool managers and understood the objective. Many of fish, doves & deer were harvested while on the clock. Remote working tip: If you have a conference call and it's windy outside put your phone in a plastic bag, it cuts the wind noise.

my dad went to work every day. He expected me to do the same in school. It was a valuable lesson and I had great respect for him for it.

He asked why I was talking so quietly and I said, “Because I am sitting in my blind trying to hunt.” He laughed, then we got one of my employees on the line and fired him. Mom let us skip from time to time from about age 12 on....after my nephew died, she took us to shoot pool at the White Elephant Saloon and Billy Bob's on more than one occasion...and no, she wasn't drinking, she was shooting pool with us. We always had good grades and never had an issue...Sometimes you just need to step away and collect your thoughts.

Back in 1990, I was going to go on a trip to England to spend 14 days with my uncle...during school...I had to talk to the principal (I was in ninth grade) and he said, 'Sounds like an educational trip to me' and approved my trip. This was right around the time where if you missed 10 or more days in a school year, you may have to retake the entire year.
