 What kind of snake is this?

It's definitely a nonvenomous Bullsnake (Pituophis catenifer sayi) .

That's kind of an important diagnostic feature. Maybe he was thinking along the lines of a 'Seedless Watermelon'.  No, not a rattlesnake and also not a water-snake. I'm with the Bullsnake group.

The worst I have ever been scared by a snake was when I walked up on a big bull snake while fishing in Western Oklahoma, Float tube went north , fishing rod went south and I went backwards due west. MO
 MY BACKYARD , 20,000 ACRES , NO MOWING

Every snake some people see is a rattle snake. My FIL has always been that way. Most recently some guys I had pouring concrete at the house found a baby rattlesnake. Made me nervous for the kids spent a few minutes looking for it and finally found it the guy said yeah that’s it. It was a grass snake I let it go.
