We had a tornado come through and wipe out some blinds this summer. My sons and I spent a couple of weekends building a new 6x4. I hadn’t bought any lumber in a while and the cost was double what I had expected. We framed it with 2x3’s and covered it with 1/2” plywood. The base is 2x6’s with 3/4” top. We used the brackets from Academy to raise it 8’. I was happy with the way the brackets worked. It took us around 6 hours to build the platform and stairs in the field. We also dug down 2 1/2’, set 4x4’s in concrete and lagged them to the base supports.

My buddy that owns the ranch and his son were with us getting it set up. We couldn’t get it upright from the trailer. We used a high lift jack to get it started where we could get under it and finally get it pushed up.I’m happy with the way it turned out. If my buddy and I had been building the whole thing together it would have taken half the time.We always work well together. This was the first building project for my sons and they needed a lot of supervision, but they learned a lot and it was fun.

That’s tough work in the heat. I wish my father would have done stuff like that with me.

I built a 4x4 blind and yours is an exact duplicate of mine except wider. I built the stand out of 2x4 s ....the legs were eight foot from the bottom of the blind to the ground. The most important thing is the angle the legs are from the corner of the blind to the ground. Mine was 4 feet at the top of the tower down to the bottom of the tower which was 10 feet giving a wide angle. This gives an angle that makes it almost impossible to turn over. My blind was in hurricane Harvey ..5 trees were up rooted all around my blind but my blind was still there with no damage. I also had stairs with hand rail on both sides. The blind was NOT tied down, and not anchored in any way to the ground. Its all in the angle. lol
My windows were mounted between slides and machined angles with the bottom of the glass at a 45 degrees at the bottom edge matching reverse angle on the drip edge from the blind. This design never had a leak for 15 years. Still is tighter than a drum.

That's some great Father/Son time.

I had most of my near death experiences with my dad standing up towers with heavy blinds on them. Janky trucks, ropes, hollering.....great times.

For the next one, build the walls independently. Stand the tower up with nothing on it. Take the walls up the tower one at a time, use a cordless driver to screw them to the deck, then to each other at the corners. Put up front and side walls, then your roof that fits like a cap. Back wall last. Go out the door, have a beer.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

He is getting big. He’s taller than me. The blind before I put on the roof slant on was 6’3” from the floor. He’s taller than that. He will get his driving permit in another month. It’s going way too fast.

I think the way we put it up was easier for me. I like to build in the shade and don’t like standing on a ladder. We could have pulled it up with the truck but we wanted to see if two men pushing 50 and two 14 year old boys could get the SOB off the trailer. That thing was heavy! It took 30 beers and a dozen waters just to get the stairs built.

The windows are a little short for me, 37” from the floor. That was as tall as I could get them and the youngest boy still be able to see while sitting in a chair. We held the 2 x3 up until it was at his sight line before nailing it.He’s the shortest person hunting out of it.

From my experience a 40” window is good and close to what most commercial built ones will be. Good job on the build and the quality time.

Looks good. When you have some time - put some smart board on the exterior. Will last MUCH longer.

What is smart board? The last blind lasted 20+ years until a tornado hit it. I don’t know if I’ll last that much longer.
