I pulled 100 pieces of brass from my supply, punched out primers and resized the cases. Threw them in my wet tumbler for a couple of hours and they came out great, clean primer pockets and ready to load. Now here is where problem comes in. I look at the online Hogdon site and it day large primers Remington 9 1/2. Ok I had a brick of those. Sat down, loaded my Lee Auto Prime with primers. Grabbed a case. Primer won’t go, grabbed another, same thing. Turned them up to see what was going on. Well the brass was small primers. I went thru the 100 and had 20 large primers and 80 small primers. I loaded 40 a couple of weeks hunting a good load but they were primed when I got them so I don’t know what they were because my son still has them. Now after saying all this has anyone else run across this?
some people like silver and gold I like brass and lead with a little powder in between

I’m not sure I’m following the last few sentences to understand the issue. If the small primers won’t fit either, they were likely crimped and the crimp needs to be removed from the primer pocket before the new primer will fit.

You'll find cartridges that use different size primers from time to time. It's not terribly common though.

I think Remington is the only one using large primers in their brass for 6.8.

There is a general trend toward going from large to small primers. It's done in some 308's, 6.5 Creed, 45 acp, 10mm and so on. There are some advantages in brass strength but also some ignition problems in larger cases with some powders.
But the short version... pick up some go-no go gauges for small and large primers. Then the guessing and surprises are gone. It is amazing how long it took me to learn this simple lesson.

If I recall correctly, the original 6.8 SPC was in small primer cases. Remington produced all of the large primer cases I've seen. I haven't had any issues reloading them and performance doesn't appear to change.

I load the 6.8 and go all small primer cases. From what I've read and experienced, there's no need for a LRP on the 6.8. With mixed brass, you just need to assess what you have and plan/load accordingly.

I think Remington is the only one using large primers in their brass for 6.8. I've got some PRVI or PPU (I can't remember exactly) brass that is large primer as well. I keep the lg primer brass separated for different loads than the small primer brass. To the OP, can your son measure the diameter of the primer on those loads he has? That would be a simple way to determine what primer they use.

The first 6.8 brass was all large primer, R-P and SSA. Sometime around 2006 SSA switched to small primer. Remington is the only one I know that still makes large primer. Starline, Hornady, S&B, PPU are small primer. The original SSA is long out of business but was bought by Nosler (SAA head stamp but different design) and their brass is small primer and not rated very high in my opinion. I had a lot of split necks on new Nosler SSA ammo/brass. I have not seen any Winchester 6.8 brass so don't know about them.
Some S&B and Hornady have crimped primers so you have to deal with that.
Sort the brass and pick one to load, large or small. Trade or sell the other.
You should also know that S&B is thicker brass, some the early Hornady was made by S&B and is also thick so ID and work up to max loads. The Hornady S&B manufacture brass has a distinct difference in head stamp than the brass today. The Hornady S&B manufacture will be marked 6,(comma)8 SPC vs 6.(dot)8 SPC brass today.
Starline seems to make 6.8 in batches, it sells out, and is not available for 1-2 years. Hornady is spotty on availability. S&B new brass hasn't been available in 3 years. If you watch sales you can pick up S&B ammo and shoot it for the brass.
As with everything these days, bite the bullet and buy it if you see it.

J Hills is spot on. I have thousands of both types of Hornady cases that I currently am using. The loads vary by .2 grains to get the same accuracy and fps out of them. They all were crimped. I bought a 6.8 Spc swage rod to use with my Dillon 600 super swager. Of course, you can use any number of small primer swage devices, you don't specifically need a 6.8 spc swage rod. I've stayed away from the large primer Remington brass, I never had much luck with them. I can't attest to how well the starline brass works yet. I do have 1,000 new cases. I'm waiting on the Hornady cases to wear out before switching.

Well it looks like I have about a 50/50 mix on large and small. I have S&B, SSA, Hornady and Starline but no RP. My large primer brass is SSA. I have a bunch of 224 Valkyrie brass that looks to be all small primer. I guess if I can’t find anymore 6.8 I can make it out of the 224. If anybody has any they want to get rid of message me

6.8 SPC brass been produced with both small and large rifle brass. You have a mixture of both. Just prime accordingly.

Yes I load for my 6.8 Yes I have both LR and SR pockets. I quit annealing the LR and as they fail and get lost I’ll avoid LR all together. As Chad said, prime accordingly and carry on.
