I've got a lares hybrid. It's a good call, but not one of my favorites. My favorite call is RNT Diablo and a no name call my wife and daughter bought me off Etsy for father's day. Both sound great and the birds seem to like them. But I like calls that are on the quite, whiney, and on the finesse side.
Honestly, calls are all based on your personal preference. What sound do you like, how much volume, how much back pressure you like. Some calls you can pick up and they just run bc they meet your natural calling techniques. Other calls don't come as natural and you have to work at it alittle more. Every call is a little different, every caller is a little different.

Personally, I bounced around to a lot of calls until I ended up with 737s. They fit me and my style of calling. I've never used a Lares so I can't compare it but I like the 737 line. try them both. I'm a believer in different calls for different folks.

No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.

No experience with Lares. I do own R-n-T. The ones I like best are the Cut Down and the Timbre. My goto call is a Sean Mann Competition. I am no competition caller but It is easy to run and does everything. Soft to Loud. Clear to raspy. You can make it whine. Easiest call I own to soft talk with. In high wind it will bark. Easy to change the pitch. Does not require hand manipulation or back pressure to run it.

Always thought the Daisy Cutter sounded really good… never heard a Lares, but in fairness, I’ve been out of the game for a while.
I’ve got a Foiles Dead Meat Mallard that feed calls real well, but my hands down favorite call is a Jase Robertson Pro Series.

IMO duck calls are a lot like fishing lures, it doesn't make a difference. Their goal is to catch the buyer, not the game. I've seen folks that sound literally like a Kazoo turn mallards on a very pressured lake, and I've seen late season birds flare from a high end call in the hands of somebody that knows what he's doing. The most important part is reading the situation. The right call at the right time means more than the complexity of the sound.
That being said, I like my RNT Daisy Cutter for big water hunting. You know, when you need to turn that group heading to the guy's spread that came in late and setup too close to ya. On small water, I use a simple whistle for teal and wigeon and a custom single reed call I got forever ago. I can't remember who even made it, but it allows me to growl a MEEP for gadwall and gets raspy and soft so I don't blow them out.

I have 100-120 calls in the duck room. Been a collector for over a decade now. If JJ lares or RNT are the choices, I’m running a jj lares t1 but with my own cut Reed in it. My RNT pre-scroll 2003 is one of the best sounding calls to date, but still has the daisy cutter air lock issue every so often. That and it’s just worth so much now that I can’t see it in the field anymore. Personally my favorite calls and what I’m running this season…. -RM FTM might be one of my favorite calls ever. It has a nasally sound to it that I look for in calls. -Brad samples blindside is an outstanding call, but he is a custom hand turn call maker so they are a bit more expensive but absolute quality. -Kent Eason lagnipippe are absolute amazing calls. Again, custom hand turns and his calls sell in seconds when posted. I have developed a nice relationship with him and have had a few made and I will never be without one. RM big truck gets a lot of love, but I haven’t had the success that my ftm has. The 410 runs like a dream but doesn’t turn or lock up birds the way the ftm does. Just got my hands on his Golgolath and it sounds pretty good. Will see how well the birds react later this year. Here’s a couple videos of me running the RM 410, FTM, Big truck and Golgolath. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out. https://youtu.be/gDZDG3X8sf8?si=lTTattRFDaocaOyvhttps://youtu.be/65Tl9yPKmy8?feature=shared
