Looking for a 22wmr thats somewhat heavy as far as rimfires go. Trying to avoid any lightweight cheap hollow plastic stocks. I have 22lr, 17hmr, 223, 22-250, 243 already so I dont need a caliber recommendations. Trying to add in a 22 mag to the collection. I want something thats comparable in weight (6-8lbs) and feel to my regular hunting rifles so I can get in some cheap practice in the off season. Its not for the range bench its for shooting in the field offhand or in field positions. I have Savage B series and 10-22s. Those are pretty lightweight and small, great for the kids. Thats not what I need for this.
Ive looked online at cz 457. That may be my answer.
Does anybody have anything similar to my description that they use for practice afield? Something currently in production is easiest but something out of production would work too.

I bought a Ruger American and added a Boyd's stock to it. Turned out really nice and cost wasn't bad. I would also look at the CZ offerings.

A Marlin 25MN is a good choice. I had one. For a better piece of wood (and a little more weight), look for the 25MN's older cousin, the Marlin 782 (same action but older with a walnut stock instead of "hardwood"). After selling my 25MN (M for magnum, N for checkered stock) I got me a 783 (same as a 782 but with a tube magazine instead of a removable box magazine). Here's my 783 with a Vortex scope and medium rings (needed to clear the bolt handle).
Pass the gravy.

Another vote for Marlin 25MN. I had one back in the early 1990’s I wish I still had. Solid shooter with CCI Maxi-mags.

With the cost of 22mag ammo, why not practice with your 223?

I have one of those old bolt action Marlins but in 22 LR, it is nice because it's a full size rifle not something meant for an elementary schooler. Very smooth action and not too bad looking.

In case it ever helps somebody else out. I looked at a few guns but settled on a Marlin 783 from the early 80’s. Dang good gun for the going rate. Shoots and cycles good. I had forgotten how even in the 80s a standard wood stock still had some figure to it and the checkering was pretty good. Dont see much of that now unless its a special edition rifle of some type. The bluing too looked better. Made me think about picking up some more 70s and 80s rifles.

We have the Ruger Precision Rimfire in 17hmr and love it. I assume the 22wmr is very similar. But then again I do really like the tacticool format for rifles. Note I do not have a real RPR either.
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

With the cost of 22mag ammo, why not practice with your 223? This is the conclusion I always came to with 22mag Last year I picked up a Tikka T3 stainless 223 for $475. It shoots dime size groups at 100 and tennis ball size groups at 300 and it does so with a box of 50 rounds of hornady at academy for $39.99. I need to see if i can find a lefty version for my son because it's probably the nicest sub-$500 rifle I've ever had. Not to mention I plan on reloading and expect ammo cost to go down and quality to go up.

No shortage of small rifle primers. .223, 300 BO, 6.5 creedmoor yes the creedmoor, there are others that you can load with a small rifle primer. Local place makes very good ammo, loads the creed with a small rifle primer. Anything that runs on small rifle primers is a good choice for hand loaders imo. No issues finding them.

Just want to point out real quick, the ruger American rimfire might have a plastic stock but it ain’t no slouch. And the mags are quality, easy to load and fit flush. It is a good gun. It can be had in wood though https://ruger.com/products/americanRimfireWood/models.html

I've looked hard at the Ruger American rimfire. I have had multiple CZs and neither of them shot worth a darn.

I haven’t exactly put the gun through it’s paces, but zeroed at 25 yards, then moved to 50 and fired a single 3 shot group at the bottom pasty on this target. It’s the only group I shot with the Ruger American .22 mag at 50 yards. I am not sure how big the target pasty is but it can’t be more than a inch I suppose, that puts it no larger than a half inch give or take at 50 yards. I decided to just take that straight to the woods. The top and right 3 shot groups are with the kid’s cricket rifles. The two holes high center and center-center were sighters with my new .308
