He wasn't party to the Watergate break in, he just didn't want people to find out about it after it happened because he thought it would look bad on him. The political left hated Richard Nixon because he was going to dismantle the federal regulatory State and they couldn't let that happen because that's their vehicle to changing the country without a single vote being cast. Richard Nixon won the presidency by the largest margin of popular vote in US history and the media did every single thing they could to take him down.
