The rattle bag
basically about 8 wooden dowels in a bag that was supposed to mimick rattling horns Have used it with success before years ago so I'll disagree here... I will agree with the DQ Kid. I have used the rattle bag successfully a number of times.

Great subject today! My biggest beef, and you could have a whole thread about this is, Cotton clothing for camo wear! Over the 50+ years of me hunting i cant tell you how many times setting in a tree sweating with 50/50 poly tee shirts, and being very uncomfortable!
100% cotton or nothing at all, or i stay back at the house! Simple, flat grey or beige or tan color tees for me, both long, short sleeve....
3 days and counting, dove opener here in central tx..... You will get many to disagree with this.

The discussion reminds me of those gadgets that came out years ago that made the sound of a feeder going off. Have no idea if they worked or if they're still being sold.
I'll see your expensive camo clothing and raise you a Little Buddy Propane Heater.

I have used one when a feeder was no where in site and deer came and also used it after feeder went off to lure deer back to the feeder after they finished off the corn.

Had this discussion with a label obsessed BIL who was getting into hunting and wanted to immediately spend thousands of dollars before even firing a shot. Seems to me that most hunting clothing will get the job done regardless of the price when your hunt consists of driving out to the blind.
Similarly, with some exceptions, I think most weapons will get the job done in the hands of skilled user, practice beats expensive every time.
The one thing I did tell him not to skimp on were the optics, be it a rifle scope or binos.

Expensive clothing can absolutely be worth the money IMO.
I don't hunt much anymore but recently purchased the Kuiu Pelton 97 shirt for motorcycle camping trips. It is a popular shirt for ultralight backpackers due to it's warmth to weight ratio. It packs down small and is really lightweight while providing alot of warmth when needed. When each oz or cubic inch of space matters you start realizing why some of the expensive gear is better.
Another thing that is worth it is wool socks. Whether it's 20 degrees or 110, wool socks are worth every penny. Farm to Feet and Darn Tough are my go to brands.

3 days and counting, dove opener here in central tx..... You will get many to disagree with this. When it’s warm and the wind has a slight breeze, cotton is awesome. When it’s cold and damp and the wind is blowing hard, cotton can kill you. Snow…forget it. Your done. Cotton has a time and place for sure but it’s limited in its ability to perform across the spectrum needed we as hunters are likely to come across.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Pretty funny, first guy says expensive clothing and second guy names all his expensive clothing. lol Exactly what I was thinking. When I was in my early 20s I took a coworker deer hunting. He went on about how he'd never seen anyone hunt in a leather jacket, which was all I had back then. We both got deer that weekend so I don't think it was his camo that did it.

It sounds crazy to use clothing and technology in the same sentence but clothing has come a long ways in the past 5-10 years. You used to have to look like the Michelin Man to stay warm below 30 degrees and then at 40 degrees you were burning up in the stuff. Today you can get thin clothes that you can move in and be comfortable sitting in really cold temps, and those same clothes breath and work if you're moving around or in significantly warmer temps.
Do you need the good stuff that works across more temp ranges? No, but it sure is nice to be able to move around in a thin jacket when it's cold and then not be rushing to peel it off when the sun comes up.

I used to be in the 100% cotton bandwagon group ... but once I found quick dry and self wicking materials, I rarely wear 100% cotton in the heat any longer. I found Walmart has the quick dry/self wicking T-shirts for $9-15 in a variety of colors, Academy's fish gear button up ... start to sweat, a little breeze will almost freeze you out. Similarly, I have moved from 100% cotton shorts to quick dry/self wicking over the last year. During the hotter months, that's pretty much all I wear and am much more comfortable.

When weather permits, I prefer 100% cotton, especially since it's the only thing that'll clean my spectacles quickly without searching around for a "microfiber" rag.
What is the purpose of blend t-shirts, with some cotton in them? Avoiding wrinkles? It's a t-shirt, not a dress shirt. Lower manufacturing cost? 'Never understood it.
Now regarding worthless hunting products, anyone remember the little thingy you'd put on your rifle barrel to supposedly cut down on vibration? 'Looked like a mini shock absorber dust boot. And how 'bout the special bag to cough in? Guess it had special acoustics or something. Wasn't there some special gum for cutting down your breath scent?

Butt Out and a sharp knife...best things in my bag.
Gimmick that did not work - for Christmas a few years ago my in-laws bought me a folding camp chair, but with a camo net attached to a frame that swung over to make a portable blind. I tried it once and there was absolutely no way to comfortably shoot from the chair. There was not a single position where I could reasonably shoot. I gave it to a neighbor instead of setting it on the curb for trash.

Hunting with a rifle and a camera are two things I truly love and think about wayyyyy too often. I had cancer in my head in 2006. 38 Radiation treatments as well as 4 different kinds of Chemo that last for 11 months MD Anderson saved my life and I'll always be thankful but it cost me most of my eyesight. I spent a few years feeling sorry for myself then my wife encouraged me to start hunting again with my camera and my rifle. I had tried to shoot a little at the local gun range and it was a disaster . I told her "I can't see well enough" I decided to upgrade my optics and after several years of saving I can say that buying the best optics you can afford is not something you or I will ever regret. While not on this sub forum but on the photo forum I've posted many photos that I'm proud of. They aren't professional grade photographs but I love being outdoors. I've killed some very nice animals since my illness and I've got some of the outfitters on this site to thank for it. Clay Pope and Josh Johnson where very patient with me given my limitations and I'll always be thankful to these men and their families. Great Folks.
Thanks for letting me ramble. Thank you THF for allowing me to be a small part of a sport I truly love. Baker

I don’t always wear camo, but never blue. Primarily greens and browns. Stealth and terrain can always come to one’s advantage.

The rattle bag
basically about 8 wooden dowels in a bag that was supposed to mimick rattling horns Definitely not a gimmick.....I rattled in 31 bucks in one season (including 9 bucks in one morning) with a Primos rattling bag. I will say though, the brand/type of rattlling bags makes all the difference. The one I have uses pretty chunky wooden dowels that are not round, and they sound very similar to actual antlers. But there's a bunch of cheap plastic versions out there that sound absolutely terrible. FWIW, mine is about 20 years old, so I'm not sure you can even find the same one anymore. If you can find a bag that actually sounds good, it's far more convenient to carry than a set of actual antlers.
