Binos and hunting boots should always go in your carry-on. yelp, I carry spotter and bino’s in carry on and usually wear boots, but have my comfy shoes in carry on. One thing you cant loose on a hunt is boots. For anyone traveling with hunting pack and arent using it as a carry on, Kuiu TAKU’s are awesome. My pack is ready to go, just pull out, re-include optics and go

My pack is ready to go, just pull out, re-include optics and go I just pulled my Badlands pack outa the barn. It still had bits and branches of Alaska in every compartment. It was a martini/impulse buy off Camofire that somebody on here posted. Using it as a carry-on for the Covid-postponed Newfoundland moose hunt coming up. Great pack. Here's a traveling hack that I read AFTER I'd experienced the incident that began right before take-off of an 18-hour flight to Jo'berg. (Thankfully, the flight attendant ended it fairly quickly.) Always carry a small jar of Vicks Vapor Rub in your carry-on, just in case some of your fellow travelers around you are a family from the Indian sub-continent and, after getting settled... take their shoes off. A dab under each of your nostrils makes it more tolerable.

That is hilarious. I would rub that stuff all over the armrests, back rests, tray tables etc to avoid having to be held hostage by that aroma.

Some misinformation, old information and poor recommendations in this thread. Read the rules and regulations, print them out, take them with you and make sure you know them. Because the attendant may likely not.
Only talking domestic as stated by OP:
Firearm unloaded and stored in a locked case. You CAN and SHOULD store you ammo in your gun case. Ammo has to be in a manufacturers box of ammunition or an approved box (I.e. plastic reloading box).
Upon checking in, they will ask you to open the case, fill out a card and place it inside. DO NOT do anything other than open the box. If you start handling the firearm you may end up in a bad situation. If you need to pick it up or move it tell them/ask them before doing so. You don’t want to be falsely accused of something. Then lock it back up. It’s a simple simple process.
DO NOT use a TSA approved lock. It’s NOT required and only makes it more likely the firearm goes missing. Put your own lock on it, and you and only you unlocks it and locks it back. The key never leaves your possession.
I do pack my rangefinder in the case as well.
I always pack my spotting scope, binoculars in my carryon. No reason you can’t pack a scope also.
At the end of the day, some people are terrible/horrible people. Whether wrong or right they may want to make your life hell. But, the rules are rules. Follow them, have a copy with and ask to talk to their superiors.
I have traveled like thsi many years now and have never had an issue. This right here. I would never take any advice from folks here. Do you own research OP.
I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect. Some people live an entire lifetime & wonder if they ever made a difference in the world, a veteran doesn't have that problem. Reagan

Alaska Airlines is probably the most friendly to luggage like firearms & fishing tackle, as their livelihood depends on transporting this stuff regularly.
But yes to above comments on TSA. Doesn't matter how firearm-friendly the airline is if TSA has a burr up its butt AK Airlines for me too. It also helps that they give a five 70lb luggage authorization for us military guys to get meat home.

Recommendations for domestic airlines that allows firearms?
Will be traveling primarily out of DFW.
i.e. DFW to Phoenix, DFW to Denver, etc.
Fly Southwest. I fly several days a week and they've never lost a gun. Check in is easy. AA - SUCKS. I have family that flies for them and I still hate the company. They lose guns, hate the fact you carry them, etc. On most trips, I encounter gate agents that actively look at the rules to find a way to deny firearms as checked baggage. As a last resort, FedEx the gun to yourself at the hotel.

I've never had a problem travelling with a boom stick with United or Southwest. Make sure you have a box to put your bullets in. They don't like loose bullets.
My brother came to visit and do a hog hunt. He reloads .45LC and he put a bunch of shells into a sock to transport them. Obviously the TSA had a problem with the sock/box concept, but they offered up a solution at the last minute. They emptied out a box of latex gloves that the TSA uses for search and what have you and poured the shells into the glove box, then taped the hell out of it. All good!
Nice of the TSA to think outside the box, or inside the box, if you will.
This was at O'Hare.

The last two times I flew with guns it was Alaska Airlines. It was quick and easy, and believe it or not, TSA was the quickest part of the whole process. They never even had me open the case.

This is not about any firearm issue, but rather my experience with ammunition. I had booked a red stag hunt in Scotland last year, consequently, I had previously completed the documentation for the TSA Prescreen, and had the TSA PRESCREENING card and documents, and was all ready to go thru the TSA line at the airport. Arrived early at Austin- Bergstrom and British Airways, I went thru the first process with my carry-on bag, but then was pulled aside, right away. Needless to say, I was surprised, especially when my bag was screened again, then placed in a special x-ray machine! To my surprise.....Lo and behold, I had two bullets under the bottom pad in my bag! I had used that same bag, when I went to my lease, to carry my toiletries, socks, etc.,and sometimes when I unload my rifle I will put the loose bullets in that bag! I did not notice the bullets when I packed that bag.
So, after all the alarms went off, and I was screened by hand, and the two bullets were removed from my carry-on, I proceeded to board the plane for a great 12 hour flight, landing in Heathrow. Then after taking the tram over to another terminal still in Heathrow for my flight to Glasgow, I once again had to go thru screening with an additional side screen process again! Apparently, I had been "TAGGED" earlier when I boarded in Austin. Also after the hunt and when I was returning home after the hunt, and because I previously had been TAGGED, I had to go thru the "side screening process" again!
Moral of the story...... check all your baggage before you fly and make sure you don't carry on any ammunition! ! !
