I was told by many the Leupold Mk5 was the answer to their problems but many more said they still have tracking problems. I took a chance because I am a Leupold fan. I paid retail for a new 5-25 illuminated and put it on a new rifle. I fought issues with that rifle until I set an old SS on it and the issues were suddenly gone. Leupold replaced the erector and said there wasn’t anything wrong with old one. I sent it down the road when it came back with a clean bill of health. I now have a ZCO on my rifle but that old, heavy, ugly SS 5-20 is sitting on the bench in rings just waiting.
I’d say they can all fail, but if a brand is known for issues, they probably have issues. Leupold went from a single spring to a two spring erector, to fix their problems on the Mk 5, it was worth a try. Hell, maybe they are twice as good as the Mk4.

Are they getting a different product than what the average joe can buy? In some cases, yes. In some cases, yes. Some people are that way. In some cases, yes. Additionally, opposed to change/creatures of habit/familiarity and "if it aint broke don't fix it". This was the first reply. And did do a great job of answering the real questions.

I know of a Leupold MK8 ($$$$$) that out of the box failed to track. It was sent in. A new one was sent to the customer. Customer sold the new one, and bought a NF ATACR for probably even, or less money. Leupold problem solved by getting rid of it.

Leupold Mk5 is a great scope with a great track record.
Vortex is a warranty with a complimentary scope.

If I had a certain budget for a rifle & scope combo I would definitely be spending more of that budget on the scope than I would on the rifle. High end scopes do a lot more to enhance the shooting experience than the rifle itself does.
