Did everyone in Texas get the emergency text alert out of Harris county? We’re 330 miles away and the asshats blasted 5 phones freaking the entire house out over something 6 plus hours away??? Somebody needs to get control over these morons, they deserve a swift kick in the nuts…

The alerts have value if used properly. This one had a name and a license plate of a bad guy.
I consider it valid.

It's not an emergency until it's on my doorstep, I turned all that crap off.

I turned off amber alerts. That system is abused, not used for the intended reason. “Amber Hagerman”.

I have mine disabled. Pretty sure Android can do it too.

I’ve had plenty emergencies as well but I didn’t land blast the whole damn state over it, I kept mine on for weather emergencies but screw that it’s off for good now. They’ll piss everybody off and their messages will go on deaf ears.

On a side note. I’m shocked the Amber Hagerman murder has never been solved. I believe they have DNA, surely they have done genealogical dna tracing.

Who knows but if they have dna somebody will eventually get popped for it by one of those homely looking genealogy chicks that can tell you what your great great great grandfathers shirt color was in 1762 when he stepped off the boat

Bad guys do travel. Black guy killed a convenience store clerk in El Paso and took off east on I10. Kimble County Sheriff went up to the highway and opened up on a Hispanic oil field worker driving home. (Can't remember exact details, but the vehicle description didn't match either, 'cept that it was a pickup.) The guy lived. Rangers supposedly investigated, but no charges. Civil suit is probably still underway. Sheriff didn't get reelected, go figure.

Since area codes don't mean much anymore with cell phones keeping the same # if you move I don't know how alerts could be tailored to a certain area.

I have all alerts turned off on my phone. As a matter of fact, I have just about everything turned off on my phone.

Mine just went off. Scared the $hit out of me and the cat.

I keep mine turned off. I get notified when I check Facebook if there's an amber alert. The only one you can't turn off is the presidential one, I think. I had one go off while driving. It was a TXDot notification about something on the highway I was traveling. I didn't even know that was a thing they could do until about 6 months ago.

I had one of those, but it came through the Superduty, not my phone. They're always watching.

that's a short drive. very valid alert.

It's poor judgement like this alert that results in a of folks disabling something that has the potential to save lives during real emergencies.
