I purchased this 5000 Lumen Solar Motion Street Light to mount near my feeder. It will be green light just wondering how far away should I be setting it? Planning on mounting it about 12 feet high if possible.

I have something similar to that. I drive a T-post in the ground and drop a 2" PVC pipe about 6" or 7' tall over the post. I attached the light to the PVC. I either dig a hole and fill it back layered with corn and dirt or attach a pig pipe feeder to the post. Has worked well for me. I also put electrical tape around the PVC in 12" increments from the bottom up to 3' so I can see on camera how big the pig are.

^^^^^

I do that also.....BUT the hog needs to be very close to the 'gauge' in order for you tell much about it.

Otherwise 'perspective' is forced or diminished when the animal is not in the same focal plane. But you can some idea of their height and scale.

You guys think a 5000 Lumen light will be too bright? Got the light in yesterday and didn't think it would be that big. I probably should had got the smaller 1000 Lumen one. Thinking of putting it about 20ft away from the feeder and about 12ft high.

I have three dedicated hog stands with feeders on my property. All using LED lights to illuminate the area.

I've been doing this for over 20 yrs and experimented with light placement in different ways. I can say unequivocally that placing the light source as high as it is possible/reasonable makes a BIG difference, so I believe you are on the right track there.

The distance away.....should be dictated by the amount of light it will cast and how large an area you want to cover.

Now I know someone is going to jump in here and tell us about how they just use a white light mounted on a T-post and have hogs all the over the place. I get it. Hogs from one area to another are different. Some don't receive much pressure. Some seem oblivious to light or anything new and others are spooky. But day in and day out....you'll do best by making your ambush spot as stealthy as possible.

With an extremely bright light.....the hogs will often see the light 'source'. So one benefit of having it mounted up high is that hogs don't really have any natural predators that come from above and they don't generally focus their attention there.

Another benefit is that a light mounted high up (and fairly close to where the hogs are) creates much smaller 'shadows' when the hogs are underneath it. Whether or not the hogs can see the light itself (red or green) isn't usually the issue, they both create shadows on the far side of the hogs.... which they DO see. Whether they react to that or not depends on many things.

I have my lights on photocells....so they are already on when its dark and the hogs show up. In my experience....hogs don't really like to be suddenly 'lit up'. There are lights that come on and gradually intensify. I have no experience with those but I am sure that is preferable to lights that come on by motion detection and full intensity.

RED or GREEN? Now there is subject that will start an immediate argument. I have a preference and a lot of time using both under different circumstances. I'm sure you will figure out what works best for you. Let the hogs be your guide. Best of luck Sir. Get those Hogs!

Thank you for the great advice. I want to mount it as high as possible but not to high to wear the sensor doesn't sense them when they are under the feeder. At the moment I have them coming out to the feeder all day and night. Also have to figure out where to place the light so it doesn't face me when shooting or face the camera but still get sun on it to charge up.

I'm debating if I should just add it onto the 4x4 post that I have my camera set up on. It's a post that I have in concrete inside a 5 gallon bucket which makes it mobile. Not sure if it would be a good idea to attach a 10ft pole onto it with the light. What do you guys think?

My lights have both in one unit. They give good contrast and depth perception.

Whatever you choose to do......DO try to get the light elevated.

I don't try to 'bathe' a large area where I expect/want the hogs to appear, though that might be appropriate for some.

My intent is to create a 'spot lighted' area under which they will come. This results in minimal shadowing....which I've seen hogs spook from on quite a few occasions.

Though the hogs in the video below came in before dark.....you can still see (at the end) very little shadowing because the light source if mostly from above.

36K lumens doesn’t bother them a bit.

That's what I call well lit.

Does the light stay on all the time, or is it on a sensor of some kind?

Wow... That's really impressive. Yesterday I had a chance to work on the light I purchased. My buddy had some green film that I intended on using but couldn't due to the way the light was constructed. So I decided to run to the local Walmart and grab a couple cans of spray paint. Got fluorescent green and some other green. I decided to try out the fluorescent and here is how it turned out with about 3 coats on the inside and outside of the light covers. I'm not sure how I like it, might try to darken it up some. What do you guys think?

Looks good to me! I used the fluorescent green also.

I have a light made by a fella several years ago. Red and green LED’s and shines out real well to at least 100 yards. Portable and runs off 12 volt battery. I put a gorilla pod on it and can mount it about anywhere. Can’t remember the guy but he had his own hog hunting forum.

Got the light set up.  Will see how well it works over time.  Can see in the nighttime pic that the light is coming on but not sure how it actually looks in person. Once I see it in person I'll know if I need to move it.  The Kill Light on the bottom of the feeder is great when it works which is for about a week or less after resetting the light.  Have no idea what is going on with it.
