Well, I didn't see one, but I did come across a track way back in the middle of nowhere. Large track in the mud...no claw tracks. Don't know how to post pics, but I looked it up and my thoughts were confirmed. Also sent it to a friend of mine at the lake Corps office and they agreed. I have a stand not 20 yards from where I seen it. I guess I still plan to hunt it this year, but it will be a little nerveracking walking to my stand in the dark...it's a long way back there too. Anybody come across one and how did it change the way you hunt...if at all? I'm in the Sulphur River bottoms by the way.

Actually the black panther was being followed by a sasquatch, but my camera batteries ran out so I didn't get a picture of its tracks. Let's see how bad I mess this up. Hope the pics aren't too big. My phone is 3.5" x 1.5" for reference.

I would have told you that your a liar until Oct 05. I was bowhunting between Linden and Red Hill. I had 4 does in my food plot and was watching almost in a daze. The deer snorted and hauled butt, the squirrels started barking. I looked over my left shoulder and 70 yards behind me a cougar was sitting and watching the deer. It saw me moving and slowly walked off. It was a surreal moment. I called the TPWD office in MP and they said there are some in the area and that I wasnt crazy. Just dont call in and say it was black, that makes em laugh.
Talent is a gift, character is a decision.

It may sound funny, but I swore the cat I saw a couple of weeks ago in Young County was black. It was around 10:40PM and I had him in my headlights. He ran along side the road for approx 50yds. It was just too large to be a bobcat, not to mention its long tail. As I sped up and steered towards him is when his jets kicked in and left me in his dust and into the night.

Hey fitxhunter,Im in olney in young county and we find huge cat tracks every year. One year we killed a very good size bobcat the same weekend that we found big cat tracks,in a dried up pond area,so we took the bob to the pond to compare and the tracks were twice the size of the bobs tracks that we made with his paw.

Those bottoms go on for miles. I have no doubt there are big cats there. Wouldnt be surprised if some one gets a black bear on a game cam or may be they already have;)
A lot of folks seem to think that if black bear are moving in the government will limit use of government land to give bear time to re-populate.
Back to the topic: Orn is more familiar than me on that part of the world but I know it is still pretty wild in many places.
It ain't easy being me.

We had 2 cougars wander through The Colony at Stewarts creek park a few years back so Im sure there are cougars in that NE TX area. They actually brought the local wildlife biologist to a town hall cause it freaked out the city folk. He said a male cougar might have a 100 or more square mile range,so they were probably long gone once the figured out they were around a bunch of people. I think ther are more cougars in the state than most people think. Coming from a biology background i dont beleive in the black panther thing.

"Mr. Game Warden what do you mean I can't hunt deer here because the bears are trying to repopulate???"
I'm thinking that maybe Texans wouldn't be quite as apt to allow the gov't to tell them what to do? I dunno...

Good pics, DirtyCat! There have been plenty of reports in those bottoms of a big cat. I don't know what area you're hunting, but on the Cass county side, just east of Kickapoo, Fran Clements lost a few calves one year. He found one half-eaten and setup a blind a 100 yds or so away. About 2 AM that morning he saw a cougar come in and claim the rest. Whether the cougar killed the calves or not, he didn't know - but he saw what he saw and Fran wouldn't lie. Hope you see him before he sees you!

The only thing it would change for me is i'd be out there alot more trying to kill that thing. Getting attacked by a mountain lion is the least of my worries.

No bigger than you are it wouldn't even make a good scat pile; they're looking for something a little more substantial.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Our lease is along the Sulphur River as well. We've had more than one person report seeing a cougar out there. Just wish the dayum thing would start chewing up the hog population.

I saw one cross the river below Beaver's Bend. There was no doubt what it was becasue of the stride and lon tail. As far as black ones go there has never been a documented black colored Western Cougar. There is known to a black gene in the Fl Everglades cat but it is very rare. I think the people who see a balck one and seeing a dark colored cat at night or in the shadows. Someone was right when they said the best way to get a laugh out of TPW is to report a black cat.

large cats are all over semirural and rurel texas. Yes, people see them. but, a male lions range is 80 sq miles so theres no telling where he will be tomorrow. I wouldn't worry bout him attacking you, they really try to aviod people. on the other hand there is no such thing as a black panther. darker than normal yes, but if you really see a truely black large cat it would have tobe a jaguar. in texas and new mexico jaguars have traveled up through Mexico. it would be extremely rare to see one, especially a black on cuz they are mostly spotted like a cheetah
