It was about 20 inches. I can't seem to find a picture to match.

It almost looks like a coachwhip snake just not fully grown.

Scale pattern on tail gives it away (looks like a braided whip).

Is this snake sometimes called a prairie racer? Colloquially, might be called such. The same way in Deep East Texas....the black version of a Texas Rat Snake is nearly always called a Chicken Snake.

Agree with the others that is is a young coachwhip. The one's I've caught have been aggressive biters.
