Prodrive came out with a new power head for their SD. I think the thing i like the most about it is how much quieter it is. Will be interesting where other manufacturers go with this over the years.

I like the idea of it. I'm old, I like quiet LOL. I got a BPS QS just for that reason. Hard to tell from the video, but it doesn't seem all that quiet IMO.
The cooling system sounds like a potential point of failure. I'd like to see how they hold up and potentially improve.
BTW I kept getting distracted by the quail calling in the background.

Cool that they’re bringing this mainstream but their weakness is their cooling system. Working on closed loop cooling systems every day, I can tell you that the heat exchanger will undoubtedly have issues with build up and/or mineral deposits, especially with narrow channels. Usually there is an in line chemical filter added to the “machine” side or an additive in the “machine” side coolant, ie-propylene glycol or heavily diluted bleach (depending on composition of coolant hoses). I’m sure they’ll recommend distilled water only, or coolant as he mentioned, but I’d be replacing the water or coolant at least once a year. Also, I’d be interested to know what control circuitry they are using for the pump. The beauty of a surface drive is the simplicity of maintenance and repairs. While I appreciate more load carrying top end and sound reduction, this takes away from a lot of the simplicity of a standard surface drive.

I have had my 35hp muddbuddy SD for 10 years now, I'm in the market for a new motor, really just looking for reliability. I just put a new clutch in it last year, that is something I been worried about going out, so kinda feel like it is new again. Never had an issue about mine over heating, and one thing I like about my "stock" motor is that is quiet. That cooling system just seems like another thing that can go wrong, and it is not really needed.
One thing I wish I would have got was a reverse, but everyone kept telling me I don't need it, seemed like at the time it was like $500 more. Well if you boat solo all the time like I do, reverse is important, really for just maneuvering in tight situations, around the boat ramp, especially if the wind is blowing. There have been several times the wind was blowing so hard, being on a wind blow bank, and I could not get the nose of my boat pointed into the wind and push off to drop motor and go, reverse really would have helped here. But I need "instant" reverse, not the "power reverse" Prodrive sells. I know they sell motors with instant reverse, but I do not need power reverse, I do not want to pay for that, not sure if the sell motors with just instant reverse.

There was a company many years ago called freedoms outboard that had a similar concept. I think prodrive understands the mudmotor world a little better. I hope they pull this off, because we run my 1756 mstc with a 5000 efi mudbuddy at 30 mph anywhere and everywhere but it’s loud. We also run a 1960 excel with a 115 tiller Merc and that thing just hums at 45 but you can’t jump it and have to be a little more careful with it, but it’s shocking how shallow that boat will still go.
Mudbuddy has the sport v and the lower on this motor was actually designed by Mercury. It’s an insanely tough and well built lower unit. The downside is mudbuddy puts an itty bitty powerhead on top to run how overbuilt the lower unit is. I would LOVE if mudbuddy found a way to put a motorcycle or a UTV motor on top of that sport v lower unit. Supposedly when mercury helped design the lower, they said it was rated for a 150 hp motor. So the lower unit has a lot of potential, but the lawn mower motors just ain’t big enough to move that lower effectively.

Personally, not a fan of the Prodrive reverse setup. While I’ve heard some people sing it’s praises, it’s inherently more mechanical things to break and I’ve seen people have issues with the full power reverse system, more so the auto system. I’ve been happy with my XD reverse. I know it’s not gear driven or “full power” per se but I’ve never gotten so stuck that the reverse couldn’t dig me out. And, like you mentioned, it’s really nice to have at the ramp.

And I would not have a motor without reverse.
