1944 was a rough year for our country. Many young men losing their lives in both theatres. The greatest generation.

I look back with amazement at what our forefathers endured, succeeeded in and how they got though it all humbly. FDR's advice seen below remains wisdom for the ages.

My grandfather was a B24 crew member on this day he was the tail turret gunner on the Hap Hazard with the target being the imported communications center Caen, France. This was the third mission with 58 of the 73 B24s dropping their bombs through overcast skies without loss.

The first mission at first light 659 of 882 B17s and 418 of 543 B24s hit costal targets 1 B24 is lost, 1 B24 is damaged beyond repair and 14 B17s and 1 B24 are damaged; 12 airman are KIA, 2 WIA, and 13 MIA

The second mission strikes at transportation choke points in towns immediately around the assault area; total cloud causes 84 B17s and 259 B24s to dispatched to return with their bombs but 37 B24s manage to bomb secondary target of Argentan; 2 B24s are lost and 1 B17 is damaged; no casualties.

The fourth mission was choke points in towns immediately S and E of the assault area; 325 of 409 17s and 125 of 300 B24s hit targets. 1 B24 is lost, 1 B24 is damaged beyond repair and 11 B24s and 5 B17s are damaged; 10 air men are KIA.

In all, 1,729 bombers drop 3,596 tons of bombs during D-Day

When I found out that he flew on D-Day I asked him what it was like and he said “You can’t imagine all the planes in the air, all the ships in the channel, and all the men on the beach and that was it.

Thank you Pop and all the others and especially those that gave their tomorrows so we can have our todays.
