BTW. Book a few nights in Chama NM on your wat north and watch for bears. Heading north to Southfork from there, you'll hit US 160 just east of Pagosa Springs. Turning E on 160 you will get to enjoy Wolf Creek Pass. WCP is a nice wide road...but it's kind of steep. You'll see why you bought the Ram here. That beast will go right over the top no problem, just keep your RPM's up to keep it cool.

Consider Durango a hub to venture from. You could spend an afternoon in downtown with the wife shopping and dining, getting groceries, but I wouldnt waste too much time there. Yes, the train is the highlight for the area, so plan on that. Mesa Verde National park is worth checking out. Check the temps though because it was unpleasant in July. The fly shop downtown could help set you up on a guided trip if you’re into fishing.
Restaurants, Steamworks Brewery is pretty good, Fired up pizza is decent.. stay away from Serious Texas BBQ unless you prefer your bbq boiled with a side of food poisoning.

We ate at Serious Texas BBQ last summer and it was good, and no one got sick. Nothing we ate was boiled. I've been to Durango 2 of the past 3 summers, not much there unless you like walking up and down the street going into overpriced shops. If it were me I'd skip it and stay in Pagosa. We like to hike, lots of trails and lots to see in Pagosa Springs.

My mom was from Durango. Her parents lived right off the main road across from he fairgrounds. They bought their house when grandpa came back from WW2 for 12k. When they died in the early 2000's they sold the house for 250k. Grandpa hated the influx of the hippies. He literally tried to run them over every chance he got when going downtown. It is a wonder he didn't get one. It was a cool place to go to when I was kid but I doubt it is the same now. Dad was a deputy sheriff there for a few years. He told me about one time arresting Sonny Barger. I was really too young at the time to understand they relevance and he has been gone for nearly a decade.

This being our first trip to Durango, but not the first to that general area, the plan is to use the RV place near Durango as a sort of home base. The info from you guys is very useful, and we appreciate it (me and the 1st Sgt/wife). I let her read all the comments, so she’d get all the info available. She plans. I drive Miss Daisy.

I have a sister in Durango. Stay away from the Hippies smile.
The train museum is cool. Try to go fly fishing in the river. It will be cold but really beautiful.
Blakes burger in NM on the way there is nice. Get the green chili on your burger. You'll thank me.
Check out the General Palmer hotel. Neat place and the wing bar accross the street is good. Most beer there is really nice.

Enjoy!

Take a raft trip on the Animas. Visit Mesa Verde National Park.

Trader's Rendezvous in Gunnison is a must see, if you're a hunter.

If you're headed to Ouray from Durango, Ridgeway was a cool little town. We ate at True Grit Cafe when we took our elk in to get processed. Not sure if it was absolutely awesome or if it was the fact we had been on the mountain for 4 days. Either way, we will be back.

sheriff got on to me for my 5 years not wearing her mask properly while outside in 2020. wasnt a fun conversation.

Its basically a suburb of Denver now. Breck was on the down when I lived in CO and only gotten worse.

I prefer the smaller towns but wife likes Breck for the town. We stay 3-4 weeks in July/August up on Peak 8. Walk down to town for morning light coffee and then hike back up. a couple days a week will ride bikes from Breck to Friso or Dillon around the lake and back, jeeping and may fly cast. Winter she likes the openess of the blue runs and I can still run the peaks and steeps but no longer like the bumps. All I can say is Breck in late summer is way better than metromess. We like Ritas but otherwise try to avoid the crowds and down in town on weekends.

Many years ago, we used to ski in Breckinridge. Was a favorite place because there’s a real long green run on the left as you look at the mountain from the bottom. The wife and daughters stayed on the greens, so they loved that run. And there was a place in town with huge blueberry muffins. But that was 30 years ago.

We are looking forward to the Durango trip, and the suggestions have been very helpful with the planning.

if you have extra time go book a night or two at Gateway Canyons. North west of Durango about 2 hours. You can rent Jeep, Bronco, Raptor, Lambo, Bently etc from there and do a cross country trip to Moab

been to that area dozens of times but mostly out in the NF on various hunting trips. Rarely did we venture into town other than Walmart on our way in to buy licenses and final supplies. Years ago (likely 30 now) my BIL and I took a day off from hunting and walked down the main street a ways that had some pretty cool shops, hardware stores, gun shops, etc. I always liked the drive up the valley towards Silverton for it's beauty and often times fields full of elk / MD. We stayed in Silverton one hunting trip and it was the tail end of the tourist season, Lots of shops with touristy type items, lots of Indian fairs & jewelry. I always wanted to do the train ride but I think you will need advance tickets as it is frequently sold out or booked solid months in advance.

Yes Silverton can kiss my a__. Mayor is from cal and has banned utvs in town because of noise buts let's in harleys. We stay in lakecity all summer and loved riding over the divide and eating in town but never again. Freemans between lakecity and creed has a awesome burger. If you ride the train to Silverton go to the museum rated 2nd best small museum in the usa. Ridgeway is nice john wayne cafe is good. Telluride is nice ride the gondola up the mountain it's free great view. Ouray is awesome also have fun.

Forgot need to add if you like hot springs go to pagosa a little pricy but nice. We tried to save some money and go to some near ridgeway called orvis. Wow what a eye opener I threw on my swim trunks and went in and paid while wifey was getting hers on in the camper. Front desk girl said let my show you around I said great went out the door and first thing I see are three mid 20s age people a scrawny boy that looked like a baby elephant and two of the nicest hotest girls I think I ever saw. D cups and all. I told the guide girl what the hell she said I guess you didn't hear me when I explained clothing is optional I said hell at my age I don't hear to good but can see damn good. But I don't think the wife needs to see elephant boy or i might be looking for a new wife so we left. So if that's your thing you have been warned.
