I am a car junkie and have a bunch. Some don't run for years at a time but I always kept the registration current on them even though they never saw the road and when I had them together I could drive them with valid registration and just not have an inspection on the vehicle. Some of the cars are so modified that there's no way they will pass an inspection. Once Texas started tying the inspection to the registration I gave up and set up an out-of-state LLC that owns all of my vehicles and now all of my vehicles are registered in a state that has permanent license plates that never expire and no motor vehicle inspection.

I live on the border of Arkansas and Oklahoma (have lived on both sides). Both states did away with mandatory vehicle inspections years ago and there has been no noticeable difference in the amount of junkers running around.

Kansas got rid of inspections over 20 years ago and there are no more raggity azz cars on the road now as there was back then. I think Nebraska was the same.

The problem here is with the pollution. The metroplex alone has more people than those states totals.

2 weeks ago we took the wife’s brand new Yukon in for inspection since we bought it out of state. Kaufman has in the past few years been an emission county, but this time it was $7. I asked him why so cheap, me thinking because it was brand new, and he responded with “state stopped requiring emission so it’s $7 for everybody.”

That’s what I did for driving my RZR on the streets.

Many years ago the safety inspection in Tennessee was pretty rigorous. They would measure tread depth, pull the wheels and measure brake lining thickness and inspect the brake hydraulics for leaks, and they would put a drop of the brake fluid in a refractometer that gave its approximate boiling point. They also checked out the suspension for worn components, the engine, transmission, and rear end for leaks, wipers and horn for function, and they measured and adjusted adjusted your headlight aiming on an Optical machine that also gave a lumen output reading for your headlights. I can't think of anywhere else that I've lived that had such a rigorous procedure for inspections.

Plenty of us are not in the city so I wouldn't say that.

When was this? My brother lives in Clarksville (30 years) and has never had this performed to any car he has owned IN TN. Visual tire check...yes, this is normal.

Of all you mentioned the only thing the inspection does that the registration process alone doesn’t is possibly make sure the vehicles on the road are half azz safe. You have to show proof of insurance or it has to show up as insured in their computer when you register. Most people do their inspections and registrations the same day so I don’t see how the inspection process does anything more than the registration alone to make sure people have insurance.

We were living in Memphis at the time which I believe is Shelby County. Our neighbor had a used car lot and what I'm describing may have been the inspections he performed on the cars he put on his lot. I was a little kid and I remember what they did because I was very interested in it and I had them explain all of it to me but the paperwork part of it was beyond my comprehension.

Dont even get me started on this BS!!!

This year I had to stop at 5 yes FIVE different places before I could find someone willing to do a inspection on a Ford Diesel. There is no money in it so they just feed you all kinds of BS about how thier inspection guy is at lunch, the inpsection guy is sick, the system is down, etc. Its been that way for at least 5 years now.

The Dodge 2500 gas does not require emissions due to the weight but I still get charged for it at the time of inspection even though all they do is the saftey inspection just like the diesel. Then when you pay for your registration you get charged another $8.25 "inspection fee". WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It needs to go away, but so do all the damn fees if they aint going to earn it!

Hope this is true. Inspections are a waste of everyone’s life. I do appreciate the inspectors that do their job and fail vehicles that have issues that need to be addressed.

Years ago I had a Ford F350 fail an inspection due to a leaking power steering hose. I told the inspector all Ford trucks leak from there. I left, and got inspected some where else. This was before the system was computerized.

Brought my travel trailer home from lease February of last year. The license tags expired in February of this year, but can’t get new tags til I hook it up and drag it to inspection station. Not planning on using it anytime soon, so no tags or inspections til then.
