In the other thread about the shootings there were comments around why the use of drones has not become more commonplace.

I’m not sure everyone understands what has been happening in the “Unmanned Aircraft Systems” (UAS) technology.

Several years ago the FAA started developing rules around the use of UAS. This covers any flying device that is not manned. This includes what most people know of as drones.

I am not going to get into all the gory details around all their rules. you can read to your hearts content on all this as it published on the FAA website.
Instead, I wanted to focus on why drones will be much harder to use for attacks on people in the US.

The FAA requires individuals that want to fly any UAS heavier than .55lbs (250 grams) to be registered and documented. That registration requires ID verification and payment of fees.

The FAA also requires that drone manufacturer to develop and included technology that also prohibits that UAS from being operated in a controlled area. A couple years ago the FAA started requiring UAS makers to also include the ability to broadcast “Remote ID” information while in operation.

If a commercially manufactured drone, over 1/2 lbs, is not registered, it is very limited in its flight capabilities. Distance, altitude, etc.

As of Sep 16, 2023, this Remote ID will be mandatory on any UAS that meets the registration requirement.

What Information Will be Broadcast?
Whether using a Standard Remote ID Drone or a remote ID broadcast module, the message elements must be broadcast from take-off to shutdown. A Standard Remote ID Drone or a drone with a remote ID broadcast module must transmit the following message elements:
* A unique identifier for the drone;
* The drone's latitude, longitude, geometric altitude, and velocity;
* An indication of the latitude, longitude, and geometric altitude of control station (standard) or take-off location (broadcast module);
* A time mark

Remember, they the unique identifier and or serial # is also part of the drone pilots registration. So, it is tied back to a person.

https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/remote_id

Summary…
Any drone that is commercially manufactured for sale in the US and is over 1/2 lbs will be required to have this broadcast feature before it can even take off. So, any drone that is capable of am carrying a payload is going to have this requirement. The FAA, Law Enforcement can and does restrict drone flight parameters today.
After Sept 16, the drone will be required to send identifying information as well as where it took off from and where the operator is actively located.

Can this be bypassed? Not easily if it is a commercially made drone.

Can someone make their own drone? Sure
With the right amount of money almost anything can be done. But what is the return on the investment?
As has been stated…. Most, if not all, mass attackers want the notoriety and not sit behind a screen to do their evil.

Bring them to Kentucky and fly them over the neighbors pool. Problem will be solved.

Ya know, I’ve always thought about one to fly over my 133 acres just to find out what’s there.

A drone will give you a real birds eye view of your property and if you have livestock you can see there whereabouts.I enjoyed mine but I havn't flown it for several years.

These are times when Im glad I have mine.

I lose access to part of the fence during heavy rains and its the only way I can inspect.

Recommend a drone? And why?

I enjoy mine. I can set it to fly autonomously to the 4 corners of the property and some other points of interest here on the farm. I haven't gotten brave enough to fly autonomously to the food plots at the ranch yet.

Things you might ask yourself.
Do you live within 5 mi of a airport ?.
How long will it fly on a charge: 10 20 30 minutes or 1 hr ?
How long will the battery last in the transmitter ?
How far will the transmitter communicate with drone before losing signal: 500 ft .25mi .5 mi 1 mi 1 mi+ ?
If the drone loses signal will it return home or fly away ?.

These are some questions you need to think about before buying a drone but if you are serious then get a quality product.

We bought a DJI Mavic Air 2 for work use. It is awesome to fly, we had to take an online course and get a certification (license) to fly it, but definitely worth it.

Then Gov Abbot put out a ban on any government agencies in Texas to use any Chinese Owned companies products or software. So we have a huge list of apps and programs we had to block off our network including TikTok which caused a huge ruckus with our staff. But DJI is also owned by the Chinese and we're no longer allowed to use it. Going to talk with my boss about purchasing it from them.

Can't believe it's that cheap. How long have you had this drone?

Kinda makes you wonder what they are watching and the higher they are the area they see gets pretty dang large.

It's pretty cool to fly one around the place at night using thermal to find hogs. You know where they are at before you even leave the house.
