Always bought the Maverick XR. On my second set, now giving me false readings and errors, time for another. I’m gonna buy another Maverick unless someone talks me out of it. 1 BBQ pit prob and 2 food probs all I really need, my current one just has 2 probs (1 bbq pit and 1 food). Their have been times 2 food probs would have been nice.

lick yur finger and rub the lid, if it dosent sizzle but evaporates quickly, thats the right temp for smoking. dont really need a thermometer.

I currently use a Weber 4 probe, but when it gives it up, I think I'll give these a try. https://meater.com

I usually cook at 220-230…225 being the target low and slow! From working in commercial heat treating you ALWAYS check EVERYTHING before grabbing it. Make a fist and place the back of your fingers close to the metal just like you were going to “fist bump “ but without touching. The back of your hand is much more sensitive than the palm. If you don’t sense heat quickly touching it will confirm.
At 220 I can hold my palm to the pit for 2-4 seconds. I ALWAYS USE THE BACK OF MY HAND FIRST!
I believe in science and I’m an insufferable [censored] Actually, BBC is pretty damn good "You Cannot Simultaneously Be Politically Correct And Intellectually Honest!"

Can't believe nobody suggested Thermoworks. The Signals is what I have. It's amazing. They have several other options with less features for less money. They are the industry leader in cooking thermometers, with the Mk4 being the top dog for a long time (now it's the Thermapen One). Highly recommend them. https://www.thermoworks.com/

I use one of these and just lay the probe on the cooking grate. Works great for me and my cooking has been much more consistent than when I relied on the old dial thermometer.

If you lived out in the wilderness and had big feet you wouldn't need gadgetry to cook.

Am I missing out on something big? I've never used a meat thermometer. Yes, I have a thermometer on the smoker to tell the smoking chamber temp (3 actually), but When it comes to the meat, I just go by look and feel.

Looks like what is standard is 1, 2, and 4 probs. 3 is all I have ever needed, guess I need to go with 4, maybe I will thrown an extra chunk of meat on.

Cavemen cooked on a open fire, there is match now. These new thermos are accurate to a degree, I doubt if a hand or foot is that accurate. Any of those top brands are great; there is also a wireless that you stick in the meat, I’ve heard good reports, no more cable in door.

My pit has a thermostat, but I like the pit prob so I can move it around in the pit to see what temp differences there are.

Cavemen cooked on a open fire, there is match now.. I'm surprised BigPig is not on here with his pellet smoker talk, just put your meat on, press a button on your iphone, take a 10 hr nap and your food is ready.
