Looking for ideas after straining my lower back this weekend.

Hog weighed 200 lbs at least and couldn’t get him the truck.

Cut a hole near his Achilles ligaments and threaded a rope through them so I could hoist his back legs up and tied it off so they stayed elevated.

Still wasn’t easy getting his body over the tailgate.

Anyone know a trick to get these fat bastards in the truck??

Game hoist for the receiver hitch

I put in a 1,500 pound winch in the bed near the cab. Never a problem now.

Game hoist, Pullzall, or a rope and a couple of snatch blocks will all work with a ramp of some material to slide them up on. There are many many ways. Just depends on your budget and attachment points for the items above.

This was made for a full size truck, I modified it so that it works on Ranger as well. Extended receiver piece and cut 1' off the mast.

I use a truck bed hoist like this one that swivels so that you can swing the load around and more easily unload whatever it is into your truck bed. It swivels on ball bearings which makes it very easy to rotate. It also has a bracket at the top that keeps the Gambrel fixed for easier skinning and cleaning. And the height is adjustable at both the top and bottom so that you can match the hitch height while also getting the animal high enough to better reach lower part of the animal without breaking your back. I found the one I have at Carter's Country here in Houston.

Get three 2x12s and cut them to be the same length as you bed. You can lay them from the tailgate to the ground making a ramp and pull game up them right into the bed with a rope. If the boards are cut to the same length as you bed you simply put them in the bed and close the tailgate. I have used this system to load mule deer, whitetail deer, hogs, elk, black bear and pronghorns.

Watch those large pigs on the hitch winches. I had one and found a large split in the piece that slips into the receiver. But I did haul a large pig hanging on it back to camp. There was no room in the back of the Bronco.

Mine won’t. When I extended that piece I reinforced it with two pieces of angle metal, it’s double wall.

yep, you can drag them (hogs anyway) a long ways and still be able to skin.

I always have a few ratchet straps in the bed for when I have to load, one laced under the belly near the hind quarters and one laced under the chest, legs facing away from vehicle. Lift up as high as possible then engage, do other end. then ratchet up to where the back hits the tailgate, grab legs and roll over into bed.

Me as well, with a few rare exceptions. I have a chain with snap links on each end. A loop around the trailer ball and a cut through each hock, run the chain through and snap it closed. The Ranger does the rest. I had shot two really big boars from a set up we white tail hunt as well. This would have brought in a lot of coyotes over the next few days so I wanted them long gone.

As for the hoist I use, it breaks down into three pieces so it's pretty easy to have with me. There are a lot of companies making them, but if you want to use one on a Ranger you will need to extend the receiver piece to operate it with tail gate down. The receiver is well inside the lowered edge of the tail gate. When you extend it you'll be set up to weld, and the only way I know is to insert two angle pieces inside creating a double wall. It really beefs it up. You'll see when I loaded the buck, there's a bucket under it. That is a lot of weight at a good height that could swing away from the anchor point, which is the receiver. I don't want that much force on that point of my Ranger. When I'm using this on my truck it's not an issue.

Our PH in Namibia had rigged his Toyota Landcruiser pickup with a roller at the front of the hood, the front of the cab roof rack and the back of the cab roof rack. When we needed to load, say, a kudu, he ran the cable from his conventionally mounted winch up over the rollers and out the back over a hinged tailgate that rested on the ground. The skinners would fit the cable around the neck or under the front shoulders and the winch would pull it right up into the bed. I was amazed at how well this simple system worked. The PH said it could handle eland.

Good morning. Nice set up guys. For my can-am defender HD 10 I went to the junk yard and bought a piece of angle iron <$10.00, cut it , drilled it, and mounted it to the top of the cab. It mounted easily with the factory holes and bolts. I then bought a 2000lb winch from harbor freight for $59.00 and a fair lead for $20.00, paint and some quality nuts and bolts. Its wired to use a wireless remote (wire and controls about $40.00 and has worked as intended. The factory mounts and prefab mounts were just too expensive for me.

Sorry it was an easy target so I had too. Seriously though my back isn’t the greatest either and I struggle when by myself. I have the luxury of having heavy equipment at the ranch to lift things but I often just will tie a hog to the hitch and drag it to camp where I have hand winch to lift them and put them in the truck or whatever.

drag and release is preferred method. song dogs and birds of prey gotta eat too. Otherwise, drag to a tree and double hitch it, raise and lower into truck but I also have a swivel hitch hoist that is handy but bulky to carry around. Best advise is if going to keep a pig have someone else with you to do the work. Ain't no pig worth a backache.

Sheet of 1” plywood cut to fit you pick up bed. Slide it out with one end on the tailgate and the other end on the ground. Drag the animal up onto the plywood. Pick the end of the plywood up and slide it in the bed. The higher up the plywood you go with the animal the more leverage you have and the lighter the plywood will be. Works pretty slick.
