Should I be concerned about my dog getting mange now?

There was a pool of blood and caught her licking it a couple times.

Wondering if there’s an elixir to stave it off.

All THF wisdom is welcome.

Shot him this morning in San Saba

The way ypu wrote that it sounded like you shot the dog this am….but i know what you meant.

First indont see any mange on that pig, maybe bad pics, but even if the thing did have mange, lots of dogs get mange every year and there are antibiotics a vet can give IF your dog were to get it.

My understanding of the disease is it is a contact type thing (skin mites), not a blood disease. So just carry on and if your dog starts looking mangy just take it to the vet.

My labrador ate a small piece of a Sur Trece gang member that I accidently tracked into my house in the tread of my boot. My dog never got sick and never did a drive by shooting, so I wouldn't worry about the hog blood.

Right, mange is caused by mites. If your dog gets mange from the hog, it wasn't from drinking the blood but because of transfer of the mites to the dog via direct contact with the hog or indirectly with you if you came into contact with the hog and the dog then came into contact with you, such as you were handling the hog and then pet your dog without washing your hands between the hog and dog.

There are other things a dog might get from the blood of a hog, deer, cow, roadkill whatever, but it won't be mange.

Many or most flea/tick collars also help control mites and hence reduce the chance of getting mange.

Brucellosis is your biggest concern from pig blood. Your dog can get it and then pass it on to you. Its not a common occurrence but it does happen. Its best not to let them lick a dead pig or its blood. My dogs has done it countless times but its not something I let them do, it just happens. If you can avoid it then do so, but dont sweat it if it happens. Chances of infection are real, but pretty low.

Doesn’t look mangy just loosing winter coat and rubbing on trees like hogs do.

Right. It is not uncommon to find hogs, particularly boars, with some bare spots, most often around the jowls or side of the head. You will also see spotted rubbed off the shoulders and sometimes off of the hips, but the rest of the hog may have a full coat. These are typical rub spots....from "rubbing on trees like hogs do."

That hog ain't mangy. Mange is easily treated, so I'd wait and see. I don't know what kind of parasite meds you give your dog/s but it may have the goods already. My dog took down a mangy (nearly completely hairless) coyote about a month ago that was laid up under our place in the country. She took some cuts to the face so, the vet in Palestine gave her Bravecto, it takes care of it all. You likely have no problems.
