Every now and then you can catch beef tenderloins at a reasonable price. Here lately I've only been able to find it at $17 a pound. Anyone know where you can find the whole loin on sale?

Call around to smaller butcher shops. Will likely get better quality stuff even if they are a little higher than what you found.
I buy the clearance filets at $6/lb and have a great dinner!

That’s the only thing I miss about not being a mod was the JP parties…Pretty sure he got those from Sams, I been buying them there ever since, they have great meat. I have not bought from Costco.

$17/lb is not a bad price for choice and a very good price for prime.

That’s nice in middle, but not enough caramelization on the outside. I bet Bill would agree with me. Cooked this couple weeks ago in Taos, on the caramelization ..

Prime always best…

I get the whole tenderloin at Walmart and slice it in steaks, It was $10.82/lb a few weeks ago. Grilling about a 6-8" chunk is really good, it's really good cold the day after too.

While I do enjoy a filet every once in a while, I refuse to pay $18-25/lb for it. With no marling or fat it does not have the flavor of a ribeye, porter, T, or center cut prime sirloin. Proper aging, cooking, and cutting can rival any filet. I buy Prime whole sirloins at Sam's or Costco for $6-8/lb and break them down. Remove all silver skin, gristle. And most fat and you have major epicurean delights ahead of you!!!

Every 5-6 months I split a half cow with my parents. Comes out to about $6 a pound. We love it

I found some beef cheeks at Wal-Mart today, Kinda looks like tenderlions, but about 4 times cheaper.

Gonna give it a try on grill and see how they taste this weekend. It does look very good in the package.

I haven't seen JP in person since I was fishing a two day Tournament at Bob Sandlin about 10 years ago, back when he lived in Grapevine he used to stop by my house every once in while he had a fishing partner BazzTex live around the corner from me, I used to go to his condo in grapevine for Christmas a few times.

Cheek meat needs to be slow cooked - it is a very tough muscle that gets lots of use (complete opposite of the tenderloin). It is definitely NOT anything like tenderloin.

I figured there was some kind of catch like that, meat looked awesome and was priced pretty cheap and I like fatty meat.

I like to get my grill like 500 degree and cook my ribeyes 2 minutes each side and eat it very rare

I guess this beef cheek will be very chewy, since I am gonna grill it on high heat and eat it rare

It will be inedible if you grill it. Low and slow is literally the only way to cook it.

I am a very rare steak person - but cheek meat isn't steak and it won't grill like you're thinking. It's not even going to be chewy/tough in the sense that skirt steak is if it's not trimmed or cut properly. It's going to be inedible.

I will slice it super thin and give it go then on the grill, I don't know how to low/slow on grill, but doing the thin slice should help.

Thanks for the input, I bought it since I had never seen beef checks for sale and it looked delicious
