Watching "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" while working in my office. IMO it stands in the category of a truly great film. Others I consider to be truly great are; Forrest Gump, Seven Pounds, The Pursuit of Happiness, and Dances with Wolves.
What are some others that you would consider to be "truly great"? Two of these are very good movies, the other 3 just good. I'll let you figure it out but the two won Film of Year....

It gets brought up every time. I watched it before and never cared for it and I'm a John Wayne fan.

Last of the Mohicans, great one with maybe the greatest actor of all time, at least the most decorated Oscar, Lead Actor all-time in Daniel Day-Lewis. For that point, There Will be Blood.....

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
THE COWBOYS Dallas Buyers club was a good movie. Another movie he did that was real good was MUD. Not a great film per se, but a real good one.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I think the technology in newer films really helps the finished product and thus I'll rank the 2nd True Grit up with the 1st.
As far as eliciting raw emotion ... Saving Private Ryan
On John Wayne movies: The Shootist
Agree with some that have been mentioned such as Dances With Wolves and Gladiator. Both tell gripping stories !

Others mentioned that are just great (to me) are 2nd Hand Lions, and Jeremiah Johnson.
The Mountain Men with Charlton Heston and Brian Keith was really good too.
