Here is my son Logan with his first dove. He hunted with me some last year but really flung and shot. This summer I've had him on clays teaching him how to shoot. Unfortunately this was his only bird, they just werent flying by him much last night. I think he fired a total of four shells last night. This bird was his first shot and I was impressed with the kill. It was definitely a nice shot especially with a .410.

That's great. Not digging in on you but why make the kid shoot a .410 and make it even harder for him to hit something? How about a light youth auto 20?

Just curious how old is Logan?
I have a son that is 8 & cant decide if he is old enough, I know I started around that age but i just cant decide if mine is ready or not.

I say start him. If you don't think he's mature enough to be safe, leave your gun at the house and work exclusively with him.

I have him shoot the .410 for several reasons.

#1 - I bought him the Rossi because I wanted to get him a small .22, this just happened to come with .410 also.
#2 - The kick is light enough where he is not focussing on that and can focus on the bird.
#3 - I think every youth beginner should start with a single shot.
#4 - The smaller shot patter makes a better shooter in the long run. Just think how good of a shot he will be with a 20 when he gets to that point. He can already hit about half the clays my thrower throws with it.
#5 - His arms arent really long enough for a youth 20. Gun fit is more important than anything when trying to reduce felt recoil. I would have to cut down a youth 20 quite a bit and then turn around and buy another stock probably next year.

Logan just turned 9. He started on .22 at 7.

Last year was his first real hunting year. Do as Cody suggest, leave your gun at home and take him. focus, focus, focus on saftey. Give him zones to shoot in. for instance he can't shoot further left than this tree and he cant shoot further right than that tree. Safety and education are more important than any bird he will ever see in the sky.

He will have a blast and you will have a built in hunting partner for life! Get him out and enjoy!

Thanks for the info!
Mine is already started in shooting and safety just havent actually taken him out on the birds as of yet, he has a 410 as well, same gun I learned on. Great dove gun for youngster's (ocassionally I still hunt with an over/under 410)

A few years ago I took the first shotgun I ever got out for a dove hunt and had a blast. Got it when I was 11 and it will be the shotgun my daughter and son shoot first. It is an H&R single shot 410. It was fun to knock down some birds with that thing again. Of course the shells were about twice as expensive. whip
