I have been slowly transitioning to hand calls and relying less on the E-caller. I am curious if there are any hand calls that stand out as a favorite/must haves? I want to get another good bird distress & coon squaller. I know you get what you pay for, but also, the most expensive isn't always the best. I am currently running TT green nasty, MFK bunny bird, BB mini blaster and another BB bite reed coaxer.

the old saying, if it ain't broke don't fix it, if they are not working , not always the mouth piece, practice is the most important thing

That's the truth. You dont want to know what some of mine sounded like a year or two ago... Practice makes all the difference on the open reed and diaphragm calls. I am mainly looking to add a coon squaller & a bird distress that is easier than the diaphragm I have. I am getting close to having the bird down, but it still isn't reliable in the field. Sometimes it sounds great, sometimes it doesn't.

Red River calls are solid. I have most of the line up. They’re very versatile. I’ve killed a lot of coyotes with them and I’m by no means a great caller.

I just got a Prairie Wolf Specialties call from Jeff in Wellington.
Turned out of bois d'arc and it is nice and sounds great.
Single reed, jackrabbit. Nice and small too .

You will call more critters with hand calls than you will with electronics that are currently on the market. Most hand calls hit frequencies over 40,000 Hz while the e-callers peak at 15,000 to 17,000 Hz. My "go to" predator call for coyotes, cats and fox is the Mini Blaster. You can make a wide variety of sounds and requires very little wind. Also produces frequencies near 50,000 Hz.
Diaphragms produce excellent sounds and frequencies however, not the volume needed to call long ranges or buck the wind. Perhaps, better served as a short range call.
Adios,
Gary
