I am waiting the arrival of my new pup and am trying to start to gather everything I will need. It is a Drahthaar and I plan to train it for upland, waterfowl, and tracking.

Here is my checklist so far. Any thoughts/additions?

Also, what are good sources for picking this stuff up used? I have a couple months so I am trying to keep an eye out in different places where I can try to grab some of this at the lowest cost possible. Currently watching classifieds, craigslist, and next door, most of that is not gun dog related though. Also I may go the route of just making my own leads and check cords. Anyone ever done that? What rope type and hardware did you use?

Looks like a good list.

One thing I do is make my own leads and longer check cords. Just buy some rope and tie on a clip. I also tie two knots several inches from the clip. You can use it as slip lead or clip between the knots so it won’t slide. Knots can be adjusted as the pup grows.

Looks like a great list. I would add whistles and training partners when possible.

E-collars and GPS collars can be kind of pricey. I'd suggest trying to find one that does both. And you can get used models off of e-bay.

Dogtra e-collar link

Not co-signing it, just posting a link because it does both. I'd ask the Draht folks if they have recommendations. I'm training a retriever puppy who hunts close range so a sport dog 425x is all I needed.

If you want to cut down on your list.

I don’t ever use clickers. I just use the word “Yes” as a marker.
Stuff all your pockets with treats, and there is no need for a treat bag.
I keep the bathroom doors closed, so trashcan are not bothered.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

If you can't find stuff new, gundogsupply.com is a great source for almost anything you'd need to train a dog to hunt most anything.

For bumpers, I love these Kong bumpers

They're sold out at the moment but just keep any eye out. You've got some time there.

Don't go overboard with obedience and training right off. Give your pup time to get acclimated and to trust you

One thing I learned is I always get some food and water from the breeder because I've had puppies get sick when changing both right off.
