Here's a thread I posted from back in 2014. It goes over everything that I did to make the Rossi right...well almsot everything. Since this thread was posted, I also added a safety delete to it, so it only has the half-[censored] safety. It's still a good shooter. I bought a pre 64 Win 30 30 a long time ago. It’s taken it’s share of deer.
Then, I was once in a gun shop and wound up with a Win 1873 in 38-40. It had some original cartridges that I still have. I took it out, shot a deer, and took it home and cleaned it, Safe Queen for a lot of years. I once screwed up. I was looking at Gunbroker and saw an original set of bullet molds and dies for it. Money was a little tight then and I passed. Been kicking myself since that day.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

I looked at a Henery in .44 Magnum yesterday at Scheels. Seemed nice. very heavy octagon barrel. LOVE the Winchester .22's but most are pushing $2,000 now

They are such cool guns but not really that fun at a range. You really need land you can plink on at various, lively targets.

I have 3 357 Marlins......16", 18.5"and 24". Awesome guns. Load them heavy with 190 gr Ranch Dog or light with Lee 125RF. I've taken deer with both loads. Cheap to shoot, no recoil and great accuracy. Never saw a need for a 357 long gun till I bought one. Only Marlin I like better is the 45 Colt!

What about a 357/38 lever gun is more appealing than something like a 7.62x39 AR?
Lever gun is slower, holds less rounds, costs the same or more to shoot, and has about the same recoil. I can't imagine 38/357 is any more accurate than 7.62x39, or that accuracy would even matter much for the common use cases.
Just curious...I have a 30-30 model 94 and don't understand the appeal at all myself. I've owned it for 15 years and maybe shot it twice? Didn't care much for it either time. Inaccurate, slow, expensive to shoot, etc. I'd have sold it long ago if I didn't inherit it and had some sentimental value.
I would like to have a lever 22, but that's the only one I can see being interested in.

I'm mainly asking what the appeal is from an honest curiosity standpoint. Functionally they seem inferior to other readily available options. What's the appeal? Just like the look and feel of an old west type gun?

Just like the look and feel of an old west type gun? Most lever guns carry easily. They balance well and come to the shoulder like a shotgun. For getting snap shots where you have to spot your target, shoulder your rifle, and fire quickly, nothing beats a lever gun. The nostalgia doesn't hurt either.

As I get older I find that I enjoy holding and looking at a gun almost as much as I enjoy shooting it. Blued steel and nice wood makes me happy. I own several AR's (yes, they are like potato chips, dammit!) and a couple of bolt actions in chassis for accuracy, but my old bolt actions and lever guns hold a place in my heart. In a SHTF situation I'll reach for the AR. I guess I just like owning lever guns.
