I'll be bow hunting this year and I'm concerned that my bow spot is going to be run over by hogs like the last couple of years. Not that I have much against a tasty hog but I see more deer the less hogs there are. If I were to go out this weekend and shoot a hog or two would I wreck the opening weekend deer hunting?

Use your bow. Keep scent down and don't bump any deer off the food plot.

You answered your own question. If you don't kill them and or get them the hell away from your spot, your not likely to take a good deer anyways! Kill the crap out of them!!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Last year I invited a buddy of mine up to our property to go deer hunting. I wanted to video the hunt so we set up in tree climbers on a deer crossing. That morning we saw 12 hogs thought may as well take advantage of this opportunity. He shot a hog and we drug it out of the woods. That evening we went right back to that same spot and saw lots of deer. He ended up shooting a 9 pt about 20 yards away from where he shot the hog. The morning before his hunt I killed an 8 pt in the same spot. Not sure if it matters that a hog was killed there in the recent past. I do know that I have never seen a deer while a group of hogs were hanging around though.

I say no, just be as scent free as possible, arrow as many hogs as you can, try to get them away...we hammer them early on, they become nocturnal and we see more deer at our feeders in bow season once we shoot a few hogs.

One thing I do is feed more in the morning and less at night, to me and I have no scientific proof, but it gives the deer a chance and hogs get nothing at night or very little and move on.

Welcome to the forum!

I agree with you about deer not really liking hogs around! I also agree that shooting a deer or a hog will not always negatively affect the area (even with a rifle in lieu of a bow). Think about this for a minute. How many times have you seen deer stand around looking for several seconds after a rifle shot? That's because they cannot tell exactly where the shot came from. So, if they cannot tell from a 100 or 200 yards away, it damn sure isn't going to matter if they are not even in the general area when you stick or shoot hogs!

Short story but a good one. We had a hunter one time wound a nice 9pt. He shot right at dark and we followed blood with cordless spotlights until it stopped (about 200 yards). About 11:00 pm we put a dog on the blood trail where it started and he found the deer dead apprx 600 yards from the start (within 100 yards of another blind) at about 12:00am. We finished dressing the deer, taking pictures and left the area around 1:00am. The next morning a hunter took a 24" wide 10 point from that blind where all the commotions was just 6 hours earlier and dropped him in his tracks not 20 yards away from the gut pile from the night before!

Human scent affects deer far more than any other in the woods, except for the God awful smell that hogs leave under a feeder after pillaging under it! So, I say shoot them, then shoot more, and when you think you have the pig population under control shoot a few more. Then, next year you'll probably see more than the year before.

I get a kick out of the guys here that talk about shooting hogs! If I never saw another wild hog in my life it'll be toooooo sooooooooon! They are waaaaay tooooooo biiiiiiiig of a pain in the A$$ to offset a little fun shooting and decent table fair! Personally, if I want pork I'll buy some spare ribs, pork chops, or pork steaks at the local meat market! I don't care what anyone says about wild hogs and how good they are to eat, the fact of the matter is nothing beats fresh pork (never frozen), farm raised from the local market!

i have to agree with you on the hogs. we have quite a few at the ranch. if they dissapered it would't bother me a bit.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
