My buddy and I have been discussing whether or not deer pay any attention to the scent of human urine. He says it scares deer away. I say it doesn't affect them.
He asked me to ask the THF for your opinions. Thanks in advance.

They could give 2 chits about human urine. I've gone as far as peeing on a scrape, and it continued to be used. There's been numerous times I've peed off my bow stand to have deer walk right under me later that hunt. It's never bothered them.

Had a coworker claim he'd fill up empty milk gallon jugs with his pee in off-season and use them exclusively on scrapes during season with great success. Claims it allowed them to get acclimated to human scent and was his secret weapon.

IME it really depends on the location of the ranch and the deer on that ranch. I have seen deer not pay any attention to human urine and I've seen them sniff of it and turn inside out to run away. I really don't think they can tell much difference between a human or a coyote or a bull most of the time. I purposely put coyote urine on cotton balls that I tied under a protein feeder feeder plate. The deer paid no attention to them that I could tell in 4 days of cam photos.....put those out at 11:30 am and had a buck there at 4:30 pm that same day. More deer closer to dark and all night long.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Scent is funny, I've had deer scent me from 100+yds on a cool day with barely any wind and I've had deer walk within 5ft of me in 100 degree weather after a day of chainsawing when even I can smell myself. Urine is something I've generally noticed does not get a reaction.

You get old enough and you don't care if the deer care.

most o the time I do not think they care. Co-workers wife years ago got her buck every year she hunted when it was that time if the month. She said most came from down wind.

If I’m going to spend time, money, effort, etc. into a few hunts to shoot the Buck of a lifetime; I’m going to pee way before I get to the stand. Every advantage; I move to my side of the chart.

Thanks for all the responses. I think my buddy will be surprised. I am in the "You get old enough and you don't care if the deer care" group which is actually what started our debate. Thanks again.

Stop and pee and be done with it. Ain't ever going to carry no gallon of urine - will neve happen. Sounds like recipe for disaster.
Cuz won't let people, smoke dip or pee in his pasture. I see as many deer as he does.

If they don't scent on Wintergreen Grizzly, doubt they will on a bit of pee. I also guess that the odor is quickly absorbed into the soil and deer, even if they smell, can sense how long since the danger passed...but just guessing on this.
Just my observations, but when watching deer, sometimes it is like they need "confirmation" before scattering...I mean, maybe from a scent they sense a predator is near so they go on alert, but don't bolt until they get maybe a 2nd scent, or hear a noise, or catch sight of movement...then gone. I have had hundreds of deer spend long minutes staring at me in a stand, blind, or even stalking, but if conditions are right, and I go still, eventually they will go back to their business. And, if there is a 2nd time they sense me, they are gone.

Not that ethical but ive seen a family member empty the tank sit back down with a beer between his legs and a marlbro light in his lips drop a buck at about 40 yards . The buck in question gave 2 chits about what was going on and went straight for the feeder . Deer are so unpredictable one day there scared of a squirrel next day theyll wander around on a full ongoing Constuction site . I personally try an be as stealthy as possible refraining from smoking , noise , peeing ect but usually Bad habits ,nature or what have you get the best of me and i do it anyways . Im not very disciplined

Between Beeville and Refugio along the Medio Creek, the best way to make sure you saw a buck was to get Shotsie to go down the ladder and pee.

Why are the deer afraid of human scent, but not human pee scent? If you are down wind and they smell you, they are gone.

You can make things as complicated as you would like. I would never pee near a bow stand. While blind hunting or moving through the field, I will pee when needed. Typically when moving through pasture, I do try to keep the wind in my face.

I don't think they care the vast majority of the time. Per the MeatEater in a recent podcast and I have also heard what they said before, something around after 7 minutes the deer can't tell what animal peed, they can tell something did pee, but they can't tell if it's from a human or animal.

Okay to pee, but don't let a house cat within 300 yds!
