I picked up an Encore today with a couple calibers I’m not familiar with. Has one barrel that’s a 460 s&w and a 45/70 govt. I’m thinking both will make good short range pig guns. What do you think the effective range would be for each. I figure open sights for the 460, do you think open sights for the 45/70 also. Just trying to figure out my setups for each.

I found recoil to be a real issue with the 45-70 in my Encore, sold it after I played with it some. I played with a bunch of cast combinations and it shot well.

I'd scope them both

My hunting buddy has a 16" 460. He started with a red dot and it sucked. 1x6 and is now pretty cool little rig. I would want nothing to do with a 45/70 as you can feel all the recoil

If you think it is bad there try it in a Contender carbine

OP with my eyesight I scope just about everything so not sure if it is helpful. If I were not going to scope one it would probably wear a ghost ring and front post with a globe. I like that combination as the eye centers two rings real well and sight it in so the point of impact is at the top of the post at your intended sight in range.

I'd put a 1-4X or 1-6X on the .45-70

It is a cartridge that you need to pull the rifle tight into your shoulder, with both hands, and lean into it.

I was thinking open sights on the 460, maybe a tough 1-4 on the 45/70. I know recoil is going to be tough but it what it is.

Where I hunt now the shots are under 100yds and usually out of my cart while driving around.

Recoil on the 4570 is what you make it. If shooting a 405 @1400 it won't be bad. A 405@1800-2000 and it can be not fun.

People tend to want to hotrod the 4570, but after shooting them for several years I come to realize a couple of things; 1, it's never going to be a flat shooting cartridge and 2, 60 million Buffalo were killed with a 4 or 500 grain bullet pushed by black powder. A deer or pig is no big deal

Have fun

I can say the same. The trapdoor safe 405 grain loads are very tolerable to shoot and will kill whatever you hit with them shorter range. Load some hard cast 405’s @ +/- 2000 fps and they are pretty punishing.

Lots of loads will work, big and slow around 1400fps worked for and is hat I shoot these days in the 1885 highwall in part keeping the recoil down.

I have a 45-70 encore and shoot the 325 gr ftx rounds. It kicks, but isn’t that bad to me and I don’t like recoil. I sold a lightweight Ruger 300 win mag because it kicked way too hard and was miserable to shoot. The 45-70 isn’t bad.

Jeff, had a guy purchase a BFR in 45/70 last weekend at Sherman gun show, I think that encore will be a fun one to shoot.

The 45/70 came with some ammo marked Ten X ammunition BPC 500gr FP. Looks to be be cast lead bullets.

The 460 came with Hornady 460 S&W MAG 200gn SST.

I shoot an encore 45/70 with a suppressor. I load 500gr Subsonic maker bullets. One of my favorite guns.

My 45-70 encore just has open sites. I bought the barrel in a package deal years ago. It rides with me sometimes as a light weigh pig stomper. Most of my shots are under 75 yards in the woods.

Those 200SST are great for plinking and varmints, terrible on deer and pigs, at least from my pistol. I went up to 275FTX and some hard cast 325’s
