It was 17° and sleeting when I shot this buck. I had driven all night from Crockett to Junction after the evening hunt in Crockett. A northern was blowing in and I had a good feeling about it. I got to the ranch house about 2am and barely made it to the stand before sunrise. He came out maybe 15 minutes after I got setup. I was alone at the ranch and didn't have a winch on my Mule so I went back to camp to get a different SxS that had one. It took me about an hour round trip because of the rain and cold and getting the buggie fired up. By the time I had him loaded and back to camp I was exhausted and the buck was almost frozen solid. I put him in the bed of my truck, gutted him and drove him to the processor whole. Only time I've ever taken one in like that but I couldn't feel my fingers and probably couldn't hold a knife if I tried. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2023/02/full-38597-379717-screenshot_20230203_053352_facebook.jpg)
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Wasn't hunting White Tail, but me and a bunch of coworkers, the manager in Lubbock, family owned property in Tulia. We all took off the weekend and went pheasant hunting. We were driving from DFW to Lubbock and it was freezing rain the whole way. The next morning it was about 15 degrees and snowing with a blowing wind from the NW. I didn't have near enough clothes on, but there were 18 of us and we harvested 28 birds.

Gillespie county in the 70’s, we hunted several times when it was 10-15*, no closed stands, we hunted out of log blinds. I think it was 1975 we had an ice storm opening weekend of rifle season, I remember my gun barrel being twice it’s normal size because of freezing rain.

Nolan County on a cold November morning in 1994...about 20 degrees with a wind chill in the single digits. I was sitting on a five gallon bucket inside three stacked up tractor tires, no walls or ceiling. I had on so many layers of clothing that I looked like a camoed out Michelin Man I got set up in the tires about 0645, and the wind was blowing hard out of the South. I was facing East watching the sun rise and about 0730, in the middle of the big orange ball, I saw an 8 point rack pop up. Winchester Model 70 Varmint .308, 3-9x40 Redfield Tracker scope, .308 handloaded with 150 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tips, 120 yards shoulder/spine/shoulder, DRT. I got lucky that I did not have to sit out in that cold very long.

Something that happened to me several years ago in October, I was up in a tree bowhunting one evening, and I was wearing a T shirt, and I was sweating, and it felt like it was 100* and not a leaf moving. Just before sunset a blue norther blew in and with light rain, strong winds, and bone chilling cold within minutes, and it drove me out of that tree and headed for my truck. I was so cold and shivering, my teeth chattering, with the heater cranked all the way up I thought I was going into hypothermia, and it took a while for me to get warm. Never forget it!

I'll never hate any animal enough to endure anything close to what some of you have gone through. Not even feral hogs.

I don't hate them near as much as I did years ago ... it was a way of life growing up, any chance I had, I was in the woods even though very ill prepared with warm clothing or luxuries we have these days.

You guys are all full of crap. There was never any extreme weather until about 10-15 years ago due to cars and cow farts. Before that, it was just perfect temps all the time. Ah, the good old days.....
I've never deer hunted in anything that crazy. I'm not that mad at them. But I've had ice form around me several times standing waist deep in waders while duck hunting and used to get out in some stupid cold to chase white bass.

Bosque County hunting up in the "Mountains", if you could even call it that. More of a massive 800 acre hill. About 1,000ft in elevation, not much, but enough to change the temp a few degrees. About 20 degrees with a 10-15MPH wind and misting. Miserable hunt.

Many years ago I was deer hunting on the north end of the woods, looking over a bean field and waiting for a big buck. I don’t know the exact temp, but it was in the 20’s. I was in a ladder stand facing north in the heavy sleet. I had put on insulated underwear, then a yellow slicker suit I had borrowed from work. Camo over that and an old Marine field jacket. The ladder stand had on old dished metal tractor seat. It was covered in ice, but I sat down and huddled in my clothes and put on some face covering. No buck showed, and my body heat had melted the ice I was sitting on, which had refrozen and stuck me there. I couldn’t move till I got out my KaBar and chipped my butt free. This was pre-ATV, and I had to walk about 1000 yards through deep gumbo mud to get to the truck.
There is NO way I’d do that these days. I was tougher and dumber back then. Hunting deer was what you DID back then.

Hunting over by Lusk many years ago in a nice cold front. Took 2 decent bucks that evening and with cold temps just gutted and left them laying in the field till morning. Next morning they were frozen solid, stood them up on their hooves to take pics.
Hunted many times below zero up here just not WTs. My last cow bison was taken in below zero temps up by Jackson. Taken many an elk and had a blizzard blow in while getting them out of the field.
Sometimes weather gives you no choice.

Bowhunting about twenty years ago in Arkansas. It was 12 degrees with some gusty winds. I was in a climber about 25 feet up and swaying. I looked like the Michellen man with all of the layers. I missed a shot on a doe that I shouldn't have taken but it was a clean miss.
I just turned 64 last month and stay in if it is below 25.

Coldest weather in Texas I'm really not sure. It was probably a mule deer hunt I was on in 1999 between Black Gap and Big Bend. I think that land in now part of Black Gap. I remember sitting in an outhouse on the last morning and the door flying open and getting hit by a gail force wind from the north. That wasn't pleasant.

I was a lot tougher when I was younger. Hunted from trees with boards nailed to the trunk, or ground brush blinds when there was too much ice to climb.

Most of my miserable weather hunting included shotguns and ducks. As a former quackaholic I can tell you that duck hunters ain’t got a lick of sense !

In the blind in the Hill Country one morning, it was13° at Sun up. I was shivering so bad I climbed down to find a single ray of sunshine, kind of like standing in the shadow of a light pole in the heat of summer. Spotted some Axis on the sunny side of the nearby draw. Got on my shooting sticks but was shivering so bad my teeth started to chatter, i could not clench them to stop, could not hold the gun still. It was a cold 5 mile ride back to the camp but it sure beat the alternative. With big Axis buck in the sight picture I packed it in. He could wait for another time.
