Things seem dull around here right now, so, I figured I'd start a story telling thread.

I've been in a grand total of 3 bar fights in my life, and one of those three was in a bar that had a ring inside. They held "Friday Night Fights" where patrons would put on the gloves and go at it. I'm not sure that one can even be counted. But, the story I'm most proud of was the one that never happened.

I was early 40's, and was sporting a Charlie Daniels style beard with a lot of grey in it, so, I looked much older. I was sitting alone at some junky dive bar in Denton, if I recall correctly. Some young piss drunk degenerate was harrasing some of the patrons at the bar looking for a fight. He was much younger than me, looked to be in better shape, and probably would have done some serious damage to me if it would have come to blows. He got over to me and started mouthing off to me. I kept him in my peripheral vision, but without even turning my head to look at him, I channeled my best Clint Eastwood voice, and said, "You know why you shouldn't ever @#$% with an old man?" He paused and looked at my funny. I continued, "Because if he's too old to whip you, he'll just kill you instead." He stood there for a second, then motioned to the bartender, bought me a beer, and walked away. I drank my beer and got up and left. I wasn't going to stick around for him to get any more liquid courage in him.

What's your story?

I was at some bar in Dallas with my wife and her friend, While I was dancing somene took my beer or maybe a waitress grabbed it thought I had abandoned it

Usually just go to bartender and tell them what happen and they give you a fresh beer. This bartender popped off to me and I grabbed him by the shirt, he then began to rabbit punch me numerous times to the chin. I then pull him over the bar and we lock up for a few minutes on floor, security arrive and Dallas police take me to some place big place with like 40 beds in it.

Next morning wife picks me up from jail/drunk tank and I think I got a ticket.

My uncle was a Highwayman which is a biker gang up in Detroit that is considered too violent for the Hells Angels to allow members from that club into theirs. He'd finally had enough so he came down to Texas and stayed with us for a couple of years in the 80s. He was a really big guy and was freakishly strong even for someone his size. He worked as a skip tracer for various bail bond companies around DFW and he would have me tag along with him. For some reason we always wound up in these Falling Down trailer house bars on the far side of Fort Worth where he would drag someone out by their hair after beating them nearly unconscious. I very frequently had to back him up with a bat or in extreme circumstances a Browning high power. I was 15 when this stuff began.

Edit: I don't mean to imply that he was a criminal because he was an Outlaw Biker at one point. He was also a union carpenter and a fine cabinet maker. He died a few years ago from liver cancer and is greatly missed.

Best one I saw was at the NCO club at Howard AFB in panama. Every service was there and the locals were brought in. One night hell broke loose. You could see the air force folks hang back and watch. Great memories!

Wasn't much of a fight but I remember it like it was yesterday. 1984, buddy and I were stuck in Okinawa overnight while heading to the PI. Ended up in a Marine bar downtown and while having a drink, saw this chick smash a full beer bottle over the head of a big ol Marine, knocking him out cold. We got out of there pronto.

i missed out on the bar fight era.

I used to spend ALOT of time in bars and can't remember seeing but one fight. Saw many instances that got real real close but they were always broken up before punches were thrown.

The one in question, we were down at Bernies in Port A. For those not familiar, Bernies is a great hangout but its rumored to be owned/run by an 1%'er MC ( can't remember which one ) and its common knowledge not to get into a fight in the bar because the bouncers will work you over good. Well, anyway we are down there on a week night, things are sorta on the slower side when this local in a wifebeater starts messing with an out of towner tourist and they go to blows. The tourist got the better of the local for a second then the main bouncer ( guy about 5'6 and 190 lbs, with a string of stars tattoo'd around the outside of his eye socket ) literally beats the tocal to a pulp, then drags him outside and leaves him on the curb.

Eventually the guy comes too and he is outside the entrance carrying on and causing a scene, so two bouncers go outside and work him over again.

moral of the story.......don't get into a fight at Bernies

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

What Jimbo said reminded me of an outside-the-bar fight I was involved in on Royal Street in New Orleans. Me and 5 smallish Hispanic guys. I tell ya, I was so scared somebody would stick me in the back with a knife while I was working one of them over. That didn’t happen, but a wine bottle to the head did happen. My head. I remember the sound. It was a ‘ding’ sound.

Been in a few. A real bad one where nobody won. I took my licks and went to sleep in a truck bed that I thought was the truck I arrived in. Woke up in San Antonio, that was a long way from Stephenville.

I worked a few nights a week (while in college) as a bouncer at a Country Western Bar/Dance hall (The Silver Dollar, Austin, TX).

That is where I got my fill of 'drunks'. Usually nothing but folks just having fun (which is fine) for the first few hours. Then the idiots start in. People will fight over the most ridiculous things.

I have NO patience for a 'bad' drunk. Some people can drink, have a good time, get mellow or silly. Others turn into a completely different person and want to fight.

And not just guys. Girls are the worst to break up. They fight with such passion....it is hard to separate them without hurting them. Guys (by the time you get to them) are either winded or one has already had his a$$ handed to him and we just escort them out of the building.

I can tell you plenty of stories about Bar Fights. But suffice to say IF you were involved in one (of your own choosing) I probably don't think too much of you.

There are certain exceptions I make....as some people just need a mud hole stomped in them.

I hate bar fights and fighting in general, I'd rather make friends. Have seen a whole bunch and been in a few after 25 yrs of playing music in different genres in many a dive bar on the Southern Coast of Texas and a few in San Antonio and Houston. Seen plenty of stabbings, ended up in the middle of one one night. I will be the first man to try and calm things down/break it up/ but if someone swings at you, you have to react. Hate that chit because then you bust your hands/knuckles up on some disrespectful drunk's face and it takes 2-3 weeks before you can hold a drumstick again after knuckles meet teeth. Dropping drumsticks is pretty aggravating when you're playing music.

The most pissed off bar fight I've ever been in was when a couple of drunks went at it while we were in the middle of a set. Dude comes flying and slams into the lead singer in the middle of a good song while singing his heart out with his eyes closed.....then crashes into my drum set and sent a cymbal into my face and neck. It hurt and really pizzed me off. I don't remember much after that except for a couple bleeding drunks on the floor. I hate fighting and too old for that chit now anyway.

My little brother though (little big brother) when younger absolutely loved to fight, and did all the time. He never lost one, dropped 5 big ol' boys by himself one night. After the Army he would come to some shows we were playing at and start drinking whiskey. Next thing you know.....crash.... boom....bang...chairs/tables and people flying all over the place. Men getting knocked out cold on the floor and drowning in their slobber. Why? Some drunk supposedly stared at my brother's wife's [censored] and that's all it took, then dude's knocked out and my little brother chasing the last one around the parking lot trying to put hands on him. Finally told him if this is the way he's gonna keep acting, then stay your azz at home and don't come to any more shows. When a fight happens, people bail and the Popo's come. Not exactly good for the tip jar and kills the good time. Hate that chit, wish folks would take it to the parking lot and not ruin the fun on the inside.

Used to hang out in a beer joint in McAllen that had a screen in front of the stage to protect the bands. Then I started hanging in the cantinas west of Mission. Mo' better, nobody wanted any type of cop to show up and call BP. Been a long, long time since those days. I still have two beers in the 'fridge from, I'm pretty sure 4 years ago, might be only 3 years.

Did this too. Mainly at The Prickly Pear and yep, Flint's comments are all spot on. Every one of them. People who were drinking were no match for someone sober, in shape, a lil' experienced, intent on sorting it out and stupid enough to do it. People would walk in all nice and then turn into ashloes.

Never picked a bar fight, never. Stupid thing to do. I have seen too many poor outcomes. Winners can become losers pretty fast.

When I was going to school at Tarleton, occasionally we would make the drive to Mingus for some different scenery. One night we pulled into the parking lot of the Trio Club. There was a rather large woman and her significant other having a heated conversation. At some point she'd had enough and reached in the back of a flat bed pickup and pulled out a cedar stay and went to beating the tar out of him. Mingus was a rough place after dark on a Friday or Saturday night, luckily I always managed to make it out in one piece..

Sounds like you saw some old school cedar hackers! I stop in and have a beer in west Odessa dive bars sometimes which can be sketchy places sometimes...I sit down have a beer and just mind my business and keep eye on my surroundings and seem to get by. They do have moments in them but If I can see it coming I remove myself from surroundings. Always the chance you get someone that won't leave others alone.

I've been in a couple and neither turned out well for anyone, but the worst thing I ever saw was in OKC bar. We were underage, but would drive up to OKC on occasion to go into bars. One night we ended up in the Longbranch Saloon on South Agnew. Not a great place. The club had an upper level that overlooked the dance floor. A guy up on that level saw his girlfriend on dance floor with another dude. As they walked off, he held out a full pitcher of beer (old style, glass) and let it go. He had good aim as it hit the dude below square on the noggin taking him down. He looked dead, but I think he was just concussed - we didn't stick around to find out, our being underage and sure the cops would be in shortly. I don't recall ever going back to that particular club.

Was in two. Bunch if us drywallers back in the early 80's was having a good time at a gentlemans club, the bouncers thought we were having too good of a time. One of them laid hands on me and it was on. 4 of them against 4 of us. We won and high tailed it before the police arrived. Broke a few chairs and tables but no one was really hurt.

Second one was in a bar in Malone with my brother and cousin, I was blindsided by a mouthy guy and was about to get hit with a chair when my brother stepped in with a pool cue. 3 of them, 3 of us, it ended with a standoff.
