Just wondering, since I rarely see posts about people using the oldschool traditional ways. Yes, I'm talking cap and ball, and it's a little dirty and it's like bowhunting on steroids where you've got to get close, but to me that is the fun of it.

Does a 50 Cal flintlock count? Or are we talking matchlock and wheellock? I play with a T/C Hawkin flintlock. I have also taken 6 elk and around 10 mule deer with a T/C Renegade in 54 Cal but it is a percussion rifle and not a flintlock. The flintlock uses round balls but I liked Buffalo Bullets in 435 gr for the 54 Cal but they haven't made them in years and I have less than 25 left in my hoard.

I'm the weird guy in our 10-man hunting lease. I have over a dozen muzzle loaders, in-lines, percussion, and flint. I'll typically load three or four of them for a week-end hunt, then use one Friday evening, a different one Saturday morning, and another one Saturday evening.
If you can't laugh at yourself, give me a call. I'll gladly laugh at you.

I use both and prefer traditional for a lot of my black powder hunting. For almost two years there were no #11 percussion caps to be had so I used my modern 209 ignited rifles. They are also handy when you hunt where lead is not allowed as there are suitable non lead projectiles to be had for use in sabots. To me traditional is where you use irons and #11 percussion caps.

Fishdfly, how do you like your Kodiak? What load are you using to get it to regulate? I have had them in .58 and .72 and they are a heck of a lot of fun, if on the heavy side. Wish they had not gotten so expensive.

i have a reproduction .54cal hawken that i enjoy. have taken deer with it. i find that i've not been able to achieve the longer range range accuracy out of it that i would hope partly because of my own ability with iron sights. Its a short range gun for me. a blackpowder bow n arrow if you will. My home county has an extended muzzleloader season but my shots are 100yds or so and i've been putting in for public drawings with muzzleloader options.....so i've been considering getting my first in-line. Not sure what to get though.

Yep, got a nice 8 pt last Saturday morning with my Santa Fe Hawken. .520" round ball, .012" patch lubed with TOW mink oil over 75gr of Goex 3F real black powder.

I have a 160 year old Enfield that is round ball, but not shot anything other than whitetail doe. It is fairly accurate at 100 yards; beyond that I have sight difficulty with my right eye being the dominant eye with less than perfect vision.
Curious to see how New Mexico plays out this year since they disallowed scopes on all muzzleloaders in all their hunt units beginning this year!
I bought a .50 cal T/C Hawken from a forum member just about the time #11 caps disappeared. I bought this little gizmo called a mag-spark which converts percussion cap to 209 primers, google dave canterbury mag-spark for a video on how it works
