We went hunting this last week at Fork Clark Springs in Bracketville. I had been told about this hunt a few years ago but things just haven't lined up to go. Well this year we finally made time to go and we're looking forward to it.

Pros:
-the room we stayed in on Fort Clark was clean and comfortable. The only down side was my TV didn't work so I couldn't watch the Cowboys! Not a super huge deal.
-food in Bracketville was pretty good
-found an exceptional place to eat in Del Rio one night, Molcajates Restaurant. Their green sauce is the best I've ever had.
-the drive from Rocksprings to Bracketville is very scenic.
-very affordable
-lots of deer around the houses and golf course.

Cons:
-when trying to book the hunt they don't share a lot of information. You will need to read all the guidelines and rules to really gain much information.
-Matt the guy "in-charge" makes the group of hunters feel like they are an inconvenience to him the morning of the hunt.
-Our first morning set we were told where our blinds and feeders were, he let us know the deer didn't come when the feeder went off so just wait. Our problem was our feeders never went off. That's right two different blinds with two different feeders never went off. We sat for 5 hours and never saw more than a B&C Cardinal. No big deal stuff like that happens. Upon returning to the lodging area we talked with several other groups. Their feeders went off but they saw no animals. So we decided to sit in a different location. Both our feeders went off at those stands but only 1 spike was seen. Same results for the other groups, little to no animals were seen.

Conclusion:
I know the old adage you get what you pay for but I was just really hoping for a great place to go shoot some axis meat for the foreseeable future. Maybe if you go really early in the hunting season you will see more animals because there are alot of them on the golf course and around houses. However, we burned a lot of fuel to not see anything but. WT spike. Before I went on this hunt I attempted to do some research on this forum and couldn't find much. This post is not to bash FCS but rather share my findings with others who might be looking into the hunt. I'm also hoping to hear if others have shared this type of experience or have had different outcomes.

Also, I'm looking for some affordable axis doe hunts. Lodging and meals do not have to be included.

I stayed there for a little San Antonio community band concert a few years ago. Interesting place that seemed like it was a neat idea that reached it's peak years ago and now struggles financially. Very sorry you had that bad of an experience. I can't stand a half-arsed hunting operation. Unfortunately, many guys put in charge of a hunt have zero people skills and it sounds like he or his coworkers aren't even maintaining the feeders, which ain't rocket science.

Hope you have a better experience at a better place real soon. up

Your experience sounds almost identical to one of the young guys on our lease that did the FCS hunt.

Never again he said.

Yea that's exactly what I thought when about half way through the pre-hunt meeting he states he has talked to people across the state and hunting has been tough this year. I knew then I was in for a real treat.

I was there when Dan Cook was the stud for some the ground breaking there. Yes, that was some time back.

I Spent 3-4 summers as a young teen with my grandmother who lived at FCS I was a teen when the teen center was built and my GM was the director of the Adult center. I had full access to a golf cart and ran every inch of that property in that golf cart those summers. The pool is a spring fed constant flow Olympic size pool same temp all year. Very neat place and deer everywhere.

I was just looking at the website a few days ago with my wife, we are planning a trip there soon just to show her. I noticed the hunting operation info seemed to be lacking in info.

Sorry you didn't have a good experience. My memories of the place are much different but I was a teen boy with a golf cart in a large private community and there where several retired people that lived there with granddaughters from all over coming to spend a week or two with grandparents. lizard

Hate to hear about your poor experience. Have heard other similar stories the past few years.

50 years ago that fort was a new exciting place with an historical background. The fort was once commanded by Robert E. Lee, it remained as an active fort protecting citizens from the indians and bandoleros. And, John Wayne stayed in the post commander's house while filming the Alamo movie. It was a training camp during the two world wars, ammunition storage bunkers all over the woods.

We were last there about 15 years ago, and it had changed considerably. And, nearly all of the hunting reports were not favorable then.
