Looking for a good one closer than freeking Dalhart. Lubbock area or closer to metroplex. Don't mind paying good money for lots of shooting opportunities.

any leads?

We shot with Larry Pate years ago out of the Lubbock area. He had some pretty decent towns to shoot on back then. Might see if he's still in the game.

I have a booking with Larry in May, I can't wait. He says nothing closer then 500 yards but this is the way I want it. Says he has a method of helping people with far ranges. I don't care about the number of shots or how fast the action is. I just want more chances to shoot at a far distance. I have just a plain ar 15 and I put a 8.5x25x50 scope on it and it is only a 223, year ago in S. Cali. I would drive all day just looking for a few shots on ground squirrels. Well I ran across one right after I set my scope for a 200 yard zero. I saw a sage rat(squirrel) and ranged it with my finder and the big rock it was on was 500 yards. I shot it, it took 4 shots to hit it but, now I am hooked. Well I am going to take my ar15 but I bout a ruger precision 6.5, So I am waiting for my trip lol. The scope is only a vortex but I will try and save up for a Nightforce, but if i can't I will just leave the 6x20x50 vortex on there and make due. I am buying a box or two of ammo every so often, just to have a few shots banana

Does Larry allow semi-auto's? I know the guide I've used in the past said he wasn't doing shoots this year because the population was extremely low.

Yes he does, allow them as I am bringing mine along with the 6.5. With that said though, the shots will not be close at all, so you will be out past the 500 yard mark.

at least he tells you it won't be a chip shot deal. 500 yards is a long way to hit a P.Dog (ask me how I know). Semi autos are fun because you can lob them in noting bullet impact and try to "walk them in."
Report back on your hunt. Sounds like fun.

My BIL and I went April 15-17 NW os Dalhart and had a challenge with 22 up to 42 wind. The fine dust was always blowing and I'm still cleaning out my Outback. We had no shots under 250 yards with longest of 290. We both used 22-250 and was very pleased with the results however there were few targets as it was near the birthing time. The females were all ready to birth so they were mostly at home with dad. They came up for very short times to lay in the sun so several of my shots were while they were laying on the mound. We both agreed that we were about two weeks too soon.

For hunting guides on a prairie dog hunt how much do you tip them or do you?

Usually the guide puts you on afield and then you are on your own. No tip is necessary. You probably have paid enough already .

I had a great time with Larry it was a blast for sure. My friend, who had never been hunting and only went for one day had a great time. He he had bought a ruger precision in 17 hmr the week before just in case was able to use it and we did along with ar 15, He went home and ordered a upper for his ar 15 in 244 Valkyrie then a week later bought a 6.5 creedmoor rifle for 950. It was a lot of fun and seeing the PD was no issues at all. Now my mill dot scope was a bit of a challenge as the dot was covering up the PD, but when they stood up I was able to get some if I had the head peeking up a bit on top of the dot. I had a 100 yard zero and there was a lot of times that I had moved my elevation up 3 to 4 mills while having the PD sited on my lowest 4 dot. Seeing the PD at that distance wasn't an issue other than the dot was really way too big. I had a blast though, I want to go again for sure.
