Planning a Nilgai hunt and it's a good excuse to buy a new rifle. Maybe a PRC or Nosler, WBY mag, classic magnum, WSM or something bigger. Looking for opinions.

375 double, open sight, off sticks, safari style.

I do already have a box of 375 so that might work.

Everyone should own a 375 H&H. I owned one for a bit. Action sucked. Not loading a second round properly when the nasty stuff has been hit once is a puckering experience. If I stumble across a decent one, I'd be sorely tempted.

'Gunsmith has a .300 H&H Pre-64 that was owned by the guy that trained him. He won't even show it to me. mad

I've had a buddy that hunts them annually that has been asking me to build him a .338 Lapua; he swears he isn't ever going back with his .300. Personally, I'd think the 9.3x62mm or .375 H&H would work great. Having a .375 H&H, it would be my pick.

I am going in Feb. I will be hunting with a Browning BLR in 7RM using 160 grain Partition bullets.

Watched one get hammered earlier this year with a .35 Whelen.

Dang, the geriatric cartridge crowd is out today roflmao

I have one scheduled on the King in Jan 24 and I’m excited, this is a bucket list hunt for me.I 100% use hunts as an excuse to build new rifles. I have bounced between 2 and I might bounce again or build them both and take whichever one shoots better down there grin 28 Nosler or 30 Nosler 22” barrel I’m going 200 grain Accubond on the 30 and I have 180 hybrid for the 28 but probably will switch to a Scenar or try Hammer. There aren’t a lot of options in the 180 weight range.

My buddy is going with a 300 prc or 338 lapua.

Yes sir, they do. It was a joke, it’s an old cartridge that’s been killing stuff for probably a century…hence the geriatric comment, I bet the 9.3 is close to that old too.

I'm toting a 338 Lapua Mag loaded with 300 gr Bergers when I go.

Bud of mine put one down with a 28 Nosler and 195 gr EOL coming out at 3k.

.300 win or wby mag loaded with 180 grain accubonds or partitions.

Only one I killed was a cow, got her at 40 yards with a 40 grain CCI mini-mag out of a 10/22

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

A 338-06 Ai is what I used. Loaded with a 225 gr. Hornady Interlock.

Buddy of mine has killed 2 one on the Kennedy and one on the King. Used a 30-06 both times. Don’t remember the bullet but probably 180gr Cor-lok. Lol

I have shot somewhere at or over a dozen cows and one beast of a blue bull. Wifeypoo is allergic to beef and for many years, Nilgai was our beef substitute. Started off with my 270 using 140 grain Hornady Light Magnums. They quit producing that cartridge and I began to use my 300 WM with 180 grain Federals. Never ever had a problem. The only cow I ever had to do a follow up shot on was the first one which caught me by surprise and somehow, I hit hard while she was running. The blue bull was shot on the run with the 300 and yes, it was a Texas heart shot. Pelvis broke down and we had to put away that monster with a 45.

Years ago when I was guiding down just below the Norias pasture, we trailed all kinds of blue bulls who were poorly hit by hunters using massive cartridges. Many of these shots were taken with good rests and poor mechanics on still prey. I always wanted to purchase a 45/70, but never legitimized it. Thought that would be an exceptional follow up gun.

When the Nilgai are on the run, having your scope on low magnification is a must. I will get back down there. Have a group of buds who have never been on a Nilgai hunt and I am thinking it needs to happen. If I don't buy a 45/70 or 444, I will be using my 300.

Somebody referenced their shoulder was sore from just reading this thread. Nilgai hunting in the Wild Horse Desert is the closest to safari style hunting and believe me, you never think about no shoulder. TexFlip should have a blast!
