Buddy of mine and I got drawn for a e postcard hunt on richland chambers wma. Never hunted the area and was wondering what to expect. I know they state all areas hunt able can be driven to, but other than that we havent an idea. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Should be a good hunt, you'll be in knee deep or less water. The better you can hide, the better it'll work. Momarsh invisiman would be killer out there. You'll still want a jet sled to get the decoys to your cell.

Are you guys going this weekend? (12/9-11) we got drawn for it as well this coming weekend. Got drawn on it last yeyas well, same weekend too. Here's what to expect. Show up for orientation, DO NOT BE LATE. Once there they will draw numbers to pick spots. Whatever you choose is your spot for the weekend. No one else can hunt it but your party. Hunt areas a compartment pons, some are split in half and allow 2 groups since some are large areas. Most all have maintained water levels, about knee deep. You can drive up to your hunt area and decide where you want to hunt in your compartment. After safety brief and compartment assignments, you will be allowed to go scout your spot, set up your blind, or set your gear. Gates will be locked and secured and you're given a gate code. You can hunt till noon each day. I would bring some type of roll out blind and a marsh stool, a sled if you have one. Prepare for any scenario since you don't know what compart you get, they are definitely not all the same. Recommend satellite map scouting with the WMA map on TPWD site. Last year limits were easy to come by. We shot 8 species of birds on day one, 24 ducks and a goose. There aren't any facilities out there so take water, TP, and a snack, there isn't much for convenience stores nearby either. Good luck, hope we all have fat straps and good times

You get drawn for the north unit or south? They are completely different.

north unit, 17th and 18th. The guy i'm hunting with says he's tried for 10 years or so and never got drawn. I was really surprised we got in

Such a fun hunt! Did it a couple of years ago and had a great time—even shot a banded green wing. The only advice I’d offer is don’t be afraid to move your setup if birds aren’t coming in. Sometimes they’ll be dive bombing only a 100yds away and shifting a little bit made all the difference.

one key is being hidden, the units are big and cover is limited because they mow the areas before flooding. get a blind or someway to cover up and it should be fun!

Drew it last year. It was an awesome hunt for a mixed bag of birds. The first day was done by 8:30 in morning. Hunting the second day was dramatically slower. Watch where the ducks are flying and set up there to pass shoot on day two.

This is great info. Not much I’d add to that. I’ve hunted out there for many years. Not as much anymore since my oldest is no longer a youth and everything is draw except a few youth only days. Not all cells/compartments are created equal. Some have more cover than others and some have different types of birds. The WMA guys do a good job of not allowing hunting in cells with low numbers of birds. They try to do their part to make it a good experience. Son and I won it opening weekend killed our limits both days it was mixed bag of birds 10 different species.
Was there again this weekend won a standby spot hunt was still great. Got limit but it was gadwal and spoonies and 1 teal.
Now heads up unit I was intros weekend. when the shooting started birds got up a left out. They came back but only in small groups and pairs. So just sit tight and hunt till the noon cut of time if you don’t have limits.

Yeah, for some reason a lot of people don't hunt on day 2 (which is crazy to me), and that means the birds have plenty of room to find safe areas to land. It was definitely slower on day 2 when I hunted last time. That being said, I still got my limit, but it took nearly the whole time and I had to move around quite a bit.

not knowing what we was doing, we had pick 7 and i followed suit of the first 6 ppl who picked 18-22 i think it was. we chose 17. was a ton of the most weary birds i ever seen out of 30 years of hunting. wasn't but a hand full of mallards, but a ton of spoonies, teal and gaddies. saturday sounded off like ww3 with the birds flying but side stepping us by a few hundred yards. we picked up a half dozen blocks and moved north where they where going. still wasnt that great, they landed out a ways and swam to us or went to the opposite corner and landed by my truck. cells 2 thru 12 where the hot spots both days. today was a little more productive, birds still shied away from decoys but got some descent shooting after pulling every decoy but a pulsator and a butt. if drawn again in the future i may try 17 again with a little different tactics or go for one of the other cells. i appreciate all that responded with info, the marsh seat was a must and worked like a champ. been better had my waders not decide to leak at the boot
oh, and omg the coots. birds followed the coots, especially when the hawks got out on patrol

Each year different cells produce better than others and even through the season it changes. I’ve hunted most of the cells through the years. I could probably tell you bad and good hunt stories from most of them. Glad y’all picked up some birds.
