I have taken two doe with the .223, one at 170 yards with a 65 Grain Sierra Gameking, and one at 45 yards with the 64 Grain Nosler Solid Base Bonded. Both shots were shoulder/spine/shoulder with exit holes, and both were DRT.

Stout bullets and perfect shot placement are what make .22 centerfires work well on deer.

If they give you a second shot, take a second shot...223, .308. 6.5, 30-06, whatever, shoot the animal until it is down.

One shot with the right bullet- no problem.
