I went to the lease last (mid) December thinking I'd be seeing the same usual bucks and doe. But that's what we do because it's very enjoyable no matter what. But to my surprise my buck of a lifetime shows up never to be seen live or on camera! After several minutes of observing him I decided he needed to come home with me! He's getting finished up at the taxidermist and should be home for Christmas later than usual (thanks to supply chain shortages). Anyway, just a post to say don't give up!!

Remind me, did you mention earlier this season that you no longer hunt that property; landowners kids took it over or something? Beautiful buck, btw.

Landowner is selling. He gave us another season if we agreed to clear out ASAP if it sold.

That's it, knew there was something you had mentioned. What county?

Good 'ol Shackelford. Been on that same 320ac lease for 29 years.

I was going to say Shackleford from what I recalled; some good dirt in that county. Enjoy all the time left there and again, awesome buck!

Super deer. Shackleford has some beasts. Afraid as humans expand west that county will get chopped up into smaller parcels like Stephens and Young etc. Families that own those bigger parcels are looking to monetize. I digress just a gorgeous buck. Great mount.

Probably 98% of the bucks I take are in December.

Yeah, I would have observed him for about 2.5 Airborne Seconds before deciding he needed a ride home.

Great buck, sir! cheers

That’s one heck of a buck, congrats.

Had a few pictures of a bruiser on our place years ago, was a fun season going out every hunt not knowing if he would turn up or not. After the season was over we found out the neighbor shot him opening morning lol. Was nice to hear the measurements etc.

Straight up STUD! Congrats

As far as hunting December....hell it don't get good where we are at until mid December. lmao

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

One thing's for sure, you ended your time on that lease with a great buck. Beautiful stud! Congratulations!

Where I hunt (Deep East Texas, most of the time) we normally see a second flurry of buck activity around the first week of December, as Does that missed being bred come back into estrous. BUT a lot of that activity occurs at night.

Just the same....bucks traveling can be encountered....especially during mid-day and early afternoon. They respond to hunting pressure and aren't exposing themselves during the early to late hours of the day.

Then once again at the end of the season, most noticeably during Muzzleloader season (2 weeks in Jan.) bucks are moving well....seeking out food sources to replenish weight and energy lost during the rut. I've even seen bucks back in groups late season. See some of the best survivors that time of year, in fact.

So I am not too discouraged (at least on my place) if I've not taken a good buck early on (as I have not this season...so far).

Exactly!
And sometimes that secondary rut can actually be better than the 1st rut especially in areas where there are too many does. It forces the bucks to get out and move around to find those 'open' receptive does that didn't get bred the 1st time around.

For those of you in East Texas, what are you seeing as it relates to ACORNS? Are they still everywhere and still good OR are they soured or starting to sour? Like many of you, it has been a tough season with all the ACORNS.

Oh I agree with both of you. Every year if I kill a good one in November I seem to see even better ones later. Just my luck. Per our lax lease rules we can only harvest one trophy. So I generally wait if I think there could be better ones in December. That's all I was implying in the original post. Good luck hunters. I haven't fired a shot at one yet. Still waiting....
