What is your guys opinion on putting a food plot in the colored in area. It will roughly be about 20yds wide and about 75yds long. Don't have a lot of acreage to work with but want to optimize the chances of getting more deer in. What would be optimal to plant in the spring and for the winter. Would like to plant something that hogs won't really mess with if possible thanks for any input.

Is there anything that hogs won’t eat?

You could pour concrete. Once It's dry, I doubt the hogs would mess with it.

In the fall, between Sept 15 and Oct 7, plant 2 bags of oats and one bag of Austrian winter peas, along with 100lbs of
13-13-13 per acre. It will come up 7-9 days after first rain. You can't go wrong with this mixture or amount. I've planted
it for years everywhere in Texas and now also in Arkansas and always had good luck....IF.....you get rain.
This years Arkansas plot 21 days after first rain and another plot near Hughes Springs TX last year. The Arkansas plot is the one with the feeder and is 20 yards wide and 200 yards long next to the brush line.

Army worms will get it if you plant too early. Plant wheat and oats in early October.

Mr. T nailed it. That combo is my go-to, except I substitute a fall wildlife mix for the peas. Next year I'm gonna do peas though.

And honestly, it doesn't really matter when you plant it, IME. I've planted anywhere from Sept 25 to Oct. 15. The key is rain, ideally you want it to rain within a week of planting. The deer will munch in the plots some in November, but they are typically too busy hitting the acorns and rutting to spend much time in it. They really start hitting my plots around Dec. 1.

If Peas make, they are money in the late season

That mixture of oats and peas are you guys drilling them in or spread and drag? Would assume they dont need to be to deep?

spread and drag works for me, but I do till it up before and I do spray for weeds before.

Shred as low as possible a week or so before. Disc up the ground. Spread the seed/fertilizer. Go back over with a disc, but shallower.

So what would be the best method to actually get in the ground I have a walk behind tiller, a hand spreader and that's kind of it any diy tips are much appreciated as I'm on a budget like most every one is. Also where is a good source to get seeds? Any feed store or an online distributor?

If you want to do it right the first time, it is going to take a little work.
Till the ground, wait a week and spray anything that is coming up, wait a week or two for everything to die that you have sprayed and then till again
and you can use your hand spreader the same day, drag something over the plot to cover the seeds. I use a wooden pallet pulled behind my truck.
I also use a hand spreader for my plot. it's a pain, but can be done. Any feed store will have the oats. You might have to
look for the peas at a couple of places or see it they will order you a bag. I'm old and so it depends on how tired I am as to whether I spread the
fertilizer with the seed or wait until it comes up about two inches and the top dress the plot. I did not use any fertilizer this year on the Arkansas
plot as I planted with no rain in the forecast and I did not want to burn up the seed. When it did rain, it never stopped and rained about every 3 or
4 days and the plot came up great without any. So, I'm saving it for next year.

After shredding we don't spray anything. Just till up the ground good and we plant the same day we disc. Walk behind tiller you might have to make a couple passes. Throw out the seed and then cover it up. A pull drag will work, but we never had as good of success with that. The more seed the better. We use regular feed oats instead of seed oats because they are about half the price and they germinate just fine for us.

After looking at the photo, plant on the side of the road where you get the most sun.

Yes, and you'll have a better shot angle as well.

anyone done a large scale plot of this like 10-15 acres in one spot? or is that just excessive?

My first one was a 5 acre plot. But actually, your need all depends on your deer herd. the more you are feeding the bigger you need.
Most of my plots now are 3 acres with about 3-6 deer in them at a time. However, they one I'm showing the photo of is a 2 acre plot
about 20 yards wide and 200 yards long next to a brush line. I like the long and narrow next to a brush or tree line more than
the square in the open plots.

I am assuming you like them next to brush line so that the deer feel more comfortable in case they have to take cover real quick?

That is exactly right. I think they are more comfortable and will hang around a little longer being only a few yards from cover instead of in the middle of a wide open plot.
And I want the does to do just that. But just my opinion.

Mainly I'm just working with what I have. The road is part of pipeline so I figured if they come through for maintenance they won't destroy what I planted.

Really thinking about planting on both sides but I plan on putting a new tree stand up on other side of maybe close to the middle of the 2 tree lines.

I have something similar and the deer love it.
