I did a very unintentional ice test. Thanksgiving Day 7 days ago we served ice out of my 65q Pelican cooler. We started with #40 of ice and served 25 people out of it. Today was my first day off with any real time so I started straightening the shop back up. There’s easily #10 plus pounds of ice left in the cooler. Shop has been kept at 73° the entire time. Cooler has not been opened since.
Very unscientific I know but anyone who hasn’t yet beat the roto-mold cooler topic to death might value this information.

Thanks for the info. I have a Vibe, Academy house brand and a nICE from one of the swimming pool companies and they are all crap. Been eyeing a Yeti but the cost has kept me just buying ice on the regular.

I have 2 of those nICE coolers from the Leslie's Pool deal (<$50 apiece) and they are decent for what they are but don't expect ice to last. I've been happy with my Yeti and my Magellan Pro. If I had to do it all over again, I would only own Magellan Pro for the balance of price and performance

Yeti 50 Pelican 80 Pelican 150
Is what I have.
The Yeti holds ice the least amount of days. And I think the bigger the cooler, the longer it'll hold ice. The 150 will hold for a week, sitting outside in 80° weather. It'll hold an entire elk. I put two 5 gallon buckets in it, fill those with ice, and fill all around then with ice. When it's time for meat to go in, pull the buckets out, put the meat in, then pour the bucket ice over the meat. Good thing Pelican put fork pockets on the bottom. Two grown men should not try to lift it out of the truck. Way too heavy.

Yeti 65 here. Have had it since 2006. A lot of miles on us together, does what I thought it would, last forever. I bought my yeti for longevity, got tired of broken lids, handles...etc. Remember in 2005-06 there were no other options but Yeti. It was a very solid choice for me and has saved me countless dollars on new ice chests since. 16 years with zero failures.
That's a win.

There's a lower percentage of melt in the bigger coolers.

Igloo Sportsman no issues hold ice for 10+ days no problem. Precooled cooler November 10th, left for Wyoming on the 11th, returned on November 20th still had original ice not even melted. Cooler traveled on 16' trailer exposed to all weather.

The lower melt is due to the higher volume of ice cooling a larger area. If you put 5 pounds of ice in a bowl and 10 pounds of ice in a bowl and set them on a counter at the same temp the larger bowl of ice would have ice in it after the smaller bowl of ice is melted. Volume.

I told this to my neighbor and he said it changed his life.

Buy once...cry every time you use your Yeti or Rtic, because you could have bought a $110 Lifetime.
Been using the Lifetime for over 2 years now and its holding up great. Guy down the street is strictly a Yeti guy...my ice retention is 100% better than his, because his was stolen out of the back of his pickup.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

I paid $99 (each) for 2 igloo 144 quart coolers. I filled them with ice and took them to Colorado 11/12-16, then brought them home and took them to Encinal on the 18th-23rd. There was still about 30% of the original ice in both coolers when I left Encinal. I was impressed. Much better than my cabelas brand of the same size.

Just don’t get one of those big ones on the ground filled with ice and a deer carcass—-and try and lift it into a f250! You’ll die.
