Anyone ever use 24" tall panels to keep pigs away from deer feeders. I use 32" and they work fine. I have some cattle panels and thinking of cutting them in half. Not worried about cows. Thanks

I've used hog panels for years John. They worked great back home where we had sheep and goats in the pasture. Easy access for deer.

Cut cattle panels is what I use. My pen is huge. Not all are cut, about 1/2. Deer jump in, hogs don't. Use the cut portion (I use bolt cutters) to overlap where two panels come together on the outside.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I've got 34" hog panels around some, I know those work fine. I was just wondering about a 25" panel. Trying to save some money and get 2 for 1 out of a cattle panel.

Not sure what you have to deal with keeping out. We used cattle panels. Young hogs and javalina crawl through the panels we regret not using hog panels.

I tried that 24 inches ...doesn't keep hogs out..I have pics of hogs jumping in the pen. I added an extension to put the pen up around 33 inches and that seemed to keep them from jumping in. However, the bottom of the cattle panels allowed piglets in the bottom..I had to add 2 x 3 inch x 12in. wire fence to keep all pigs out. I recommend putting up hog panels as they go down fast and easy and easy to pic them up just as fast with a "T" post puller....however my pen did cost much less...I put up 400 running feet of fence. I built another one with 36 wire fence worked great and cheap. However I did have to add some steaks in to keep the fence tight at the bottom. This fence was 520 running feet and easy to pic up. All in all I would just build my pen with wire fence if the ground is flat if not you will have to add some 2x4 s at the bottom. I also used barbed wire I got for free that I used it at the bottom and about a couple of inches at the top. Now....this caused me to use breakaway wire(tie wire) to tie the fence to the "T" post to keep deer from getting caught up the fence which can kill them if they can't get their legs out of the fence. Do not make the fence tight and pretty..make it a little loose so the deer can wiggle out. I would not go any higher than three feet as this also helps the deer to break away. I never had a deer die..they did get caught up but they was able to get out.

Thanks fishbait. Got several pens up now out of hogs panels and they work fine and have been for 20 years. You answered my question about cattle panels, Thanks. Wasn't sure if they could jump a cut in half cattle panel. I'm making several panels with 1" frame.

I wrapped my hog panels with 3/4” sucker rod. Heavy but stout, some are 30+ years old back when I had deer leases

Place the driver at an angle, against the post, above one of the notches. Push back on the post, and allow the driver to fall tightly under the notch. Pull up. Repeat. The post will begin to come up out of the ground a few inches at a time.

^^^^^ They work great!! I have cut down the mid section a couple of rows on cattle panels to make it easier for big old bucks to jump in.

As others say hog panels are the way to go, use stainless steel zip ties from harbor freight to attach to each other and to t-post. If cattle are present run a strand or two of barbed wire around the top. Also no need to drive T-post in too deep in case you have to move it. Have a bucket of water on stand by when driving post to make it easier.

Everyone giving me advise about hog panels, I know about hog panels, as I've stated, I've been using hog panels for a couple of decades. I was wondering about 50" cattle panels cut in half. Fishbait answered my question.

Fishbait answered my question. Stompy cutting Cattle Panels in half would make them to short to deter most hogs 50" /2 = 25" tall, any decent size hog will either jump or just lean over that short of a barrier!

Had a buddy do what you are asking, and it worked. I think there is a video on YouTube from A &M where they did a test, and some did climb over but don't Rember the exact height they recommended.

I've built several out of cattle panels cut in half, at least portions of the pen. One I built out on my Ozona place is made up of 6 panel lengths, using 5 panels. full height 2 panels, 25 inch height, then 2 more full height and another 25 inch. the two that are cut to 25 inches are on the front and back sides of the pen from the stand, funneling the deer to enter front and back. The feeder is only a 6vdc, so no corn escapes that size pen. for the 25 inch panel sections, I leave the cut ends sticking up to deter hogs from trying to go over. This works well out there unless they root under since the t-posts aren't very deep in the solid rock.

It will work until it doesn't. I've watched hogs climb 50" cattle panels to get into pens. As you know hog panels work but I usually just go with 50" cattle panels and cut a couple down for jump gates, overlap ends, t post on each end and 1 in middle of each section and wire them up really good. We all know that once a hog figures a way to get in, over or under the pen then its just a matter of time before hog friends join in. Stompy lives on his ranch so he'd discover quicker than most to make repair. For me, I need to avoid repairs so I just look for used cattle panels and t posts and build strong the first time. I do wish I had all my panels with an angle iron or square tubing boarder and drop pins to make more portable when and if time come again to move
